“It’s not weird. Squash soup is weird, but bread bowls aren’t weird.”

Kaye took the lid of her bowl, which was just more bread, and dipped it in Ruben’s soup. She’d never actually had squash soup, so she might as well try it and make sure she meant it. Kaye wasn’t necessarily a woman of her word, but she liked to switch it up sometimes. Why be predictable when you could be interesting?

Nope, she did not like squash soup. Kaye made a face and placed the rest of the bread in her hand that now had the weird flavor on it back on Ruben’s tray. She considered reaching for one of his cookies next. She changed her mind and went back to her own plate. Cookies were for dessert, after all, and there was macaroni and cheese to be had.

She didn’t know why, but this was her favorite mac and cheese ever. Dad made a homemade dish that was also pretty good. It had a ton of different cheeses, a nice crumble on top, and delicious bacon and ham baked throughout. They also got fried balls of mac n cheese sometimes when they went grocery shopping, and her family would never turn down a quick and easy box of macaroni. Hell, even the instant cups that cooked in the microwave were good. None of them, though, held victory over the macaroni and cheese at Panera. It was just…perfection.

Potatoes were also good. She liked the potato soup at the restaurant, of course, but that was something Papa was excellent at. It was basically just mashed potatoes, but they called it soup. It had lots of milk and butter and half and half, salt and pepper, shredded cheese, and bacon on top. Bacon was a very important ingredient in the Packman household. The soup currently in her bread bowl had nothing on her Papa’s soup, but the bread made it better.

Right, there was a conversation happening. Not just food. Why couldn’t life just be food?

“You can’t be that bored. You haven’t even stolen the lighter back from me yet,” Kaye pointed out with a teasing grin, “I must be the best thief this century, since I was able to swipe this off of you while high off my ass.”

  • Kaye looked at him like he was an idiot, and Ruben made a face right back, two of her briefly flashing in front of him when his eyes crossed over. "I am not stupid. I know what bread is, and bowls.... more

Kaye stopped glaring at him after his apology. He didn’t really mind either way (glaring was not an unwelcome behaviour to the Swede) but it was good to know that she’d been listening and took him... more

Of course, that was the part he took hold of. Kaye rolled her eyes and waved her hand, as if trying to dismiss it. Her not being kissed before probably wasn’t a big deal. She was probably the only... more
