The expression on Kaye’s face when she tasted his soup made him crack up, a loud laugh bursting out. It was a good thing that he’d already swallowed his most recent faceful of bread, because otherwise that would have gone bursting out, too. There were few things in his opinion that truly constituted making a bad impression, but spitting out food was on the edge of that line. Not too close to the edge, mind, but somewhere nearer it than not. “Serves you right for insulting my soup,” Ruben informed her cheerfully, snatching up the chunk of bread she’d left behind on his place and shaking it at her. He took a bite before adding mock-thoughtfully, “Or maybe just for having a poor sense of taste. But I guess that is not entirely your fault.”

Noticing her eye his tray ever so briefly, he sighed loudly and pushed over his small tower of cookies so that it was more in between them. Yeah, she’d already taken his lunch, though not actually eaten very much, but of course he would share. He was always a little curious to test the limits of Kaye’s endless appetite, anyways. “Mid-lunch dessert?” His offer was very rhetorical, because who could turn down a mid-meal treat, like, ever? Ruben himself polished off the rest of Kaye’s bread, some of his own, and slurped down some more soup, tongue rolling with satisfaction around the large soft pieces of squash, before eyeing the cookies and selecting one studded with almonds. He broke it in half, because he had manners and would leave the other half for her in case she wanted it, and then dunked it in his still-steaming mug. Nuts and black coffee. Ah, perfection.

“You, the best thief?” he repeated incredulously, rolling his eyes for extra drama. (What could he say? Today was just a very eye-rolling type of day.) “Sure, tell yourself that if it will make you feel better. And what is next? Nej, let me guess it - you made your own Christmas card. Or you called me personally from the emergency room to invite me to the hospital. Or, oh, I have got it, you think I asked you out. Hah!” Ruben cracked up again and dunked his cookie again. The first went fine but the latter was a mistake, as the freshly-baked cookie was apparently too soft and gave up on existing at coming into contact with his coffee. “Jävla jäkelskaffe,” he swore, still snickering to himself as he attempted fishing it out with his spoon. Nope, that was a lost cause. He managed to salvage one of the almonds, but the rest was now one with his coffee. “Pah. It was good while it had lasted.”

        • Oh good, so we're in agreement - Ruben, Sun Oct 22 17:18
Ruben snorted into his coffee. “Ouch.” Poor Marissa. She was nice, but not in an unbearable way, and had a damn fine body, and yet somehow she’d wound up on Kaye’s bad side. Or maybe those reasons he ... more
          • Not sure I agree with that. - Kaye, Thu Oct 26 21:37
Oh, son of a Banshee. Kaye couldn’t remember when she started having a crush on Ruben. The first time they met, on Pearl Street, there had been some hard core flirting. It was actually a very similar ... more

Of course, that was the part he took hold of. Kaye rolled her eyes and waved her hand, as if trying to dismiss it. Her not being kissed before probably wasn’t a big deal. She was probably the only... more
