It feels like it's been longer than a day

Kaye desperately wanted to reach over and knock the bread out of Ruben’s hand. She hated being confused. She hated not being the one in the know. Not knowing how her own feelings were working right now did not make this easy, and Ruben’s just… total chill while talking about this was really annoying. The dude was more focused on his failure at eating a bread bowl (you dumbass, you eat the soup first and then scoop up the leftovers with the bread, it isn’t HARD) than explaining to her what this activity actually meant to him.

"Why would I have brought you here if I did not agree that to have a date together would be fun?"

“I don’t know,” Kaye made a face. This was obnoxious. She appreciated Ruben’s banter and roundabout way to not answer questions most of the time. It was one of his, like, top five qualities. But right now, it could not be more annoying. Clearly, her face let him know that she was not having his nonsense that day, because he tried to elaborate a little more:

“"Dates can be serious, but they can also be not very serious. Like this. I mean, I am not in a suit and tie; I am holding soup.”

She continued to give him a look. He wasn’t helpful.

This time, he apologized, so that was nice, and then he said that he actually wanted it to be a date. Okay, cool, but that didn’t explain how he felt about her. He just said that dates could be serious and then not serious. So did that mean, like, suit and tie compared to casual, or mushy couple crap compared to best friend dates?

“I mean, I don’t mind it being a date,” she shrugged, “I just don’t know what that, uh, means to you. Like, is this a best friend date, or is this more than that?” Kaye held up a hand, already assuming Ruben’s thoughts, whether or not they were correct, “Don’t, I’m not overreacting or freaking out or whatever. This is just new territory for me, and I’m bad at that. I’ve never even, like, kissed anyone, so for once you’re the expert here.”

Plus, she knew herself pretty well, and she’d be at least a tiny bit offended if this were a regular friend date and not an Interested Date. Kaye was the most interesting girl – no, person – at the school. She was literally the entire package. It would really suck if this was just a friend thing. She’d be upset, but Ruben was her best friend, so whatever. She’d just hex his hair ties for a few days, and then she’d feel better.

Kaye reached across the table and placed the lid of her bread bowl onto his plate to soak up some of the mess he was making. “I mean, I’m cool with just a friend date, as long as I know what’s going on.”

  • Whoops, that piece of bread seemed to have been the last finger in the dam. Ruben blinked once at the bread bowl, observing the quantity of soup now beginning to rush out of the side where his hungry ... more

      • Impossible - Ruben, Sun Oct 29 22:26
Kaye stopped glaring at him after his apology. He didn’t really mind either way (glaring was not an unwelcome behaviour to the Swede) but it was good to know that she’d been listening and took him... more

Of course, that was the part he took hold of. Kaye rolled her eyes and waved her hand, as if trying to dismiss it. Her not being kissed before probably wasn’t a big deal. She was probably the only... more
