Danny suspected his mother would not be so eager to meet them in term time, had it not been for various circumstances relating to his personal life - and a few bad decisions on his part - that had somewhat marred his hitherto practically perfect record, both in and out of school. She hadn’t said as much, but he got the distinct impression she was checking up on him, giving him extra incentive to conduct himself with greater decorum. Therefore, despite being explicitly informed by that very same parent that his romantic life was, in fact, in his own hands, he still didn’t relish the opportunity to divulge its details to her. Not yet.

“Are you going to tell her about Marissa?” Claudia’s question reflected his thoughts, as they progressed from the elevator into the bookshop.

“Are you going to tell her about Connor?” he quipped in return, raising a wry eyebrow to accompany his teasing smile. He had been wildly surprised to note that his sister was dating - she hadn’t breathed a word of it to him, but he was on Pearl Street himself with enough regularity to notice a pattern emerging of her excursions there, and with whom. Then he’d seen the couple holding hands - actually holding hands - in the school. He thought he’d imagined it the first time, but apparently not. Claudia was definitely seeing - in some strange, polite, third-year fashion - Rose’s brother, Connor. He had elected not to mention this to Rose, primarily because she was one of the least sensitive people he knew (surpassed only by Kaye and Ruben and, when he was being especially dim, Emmett). While she probably wouldn’t care their younger siblings were an item, if she did care, then she might say or do something that would make Claudia uncomfortable. They had little in common these days, yet Dardanius would still always make an effort to look out for his sister wherever possible.

“A mutual non disclosure,” Danny suggested, grinning at her. He sensed the concern in her voice and decided not to pry further, for the time being. It was strictly none of his business, after all. He was content in the current moment, entertained that his baby sister had secrets to conceal from their parents, and pleased that he was not alone in his deception. Considering her evident opinions on his dating preferences, he was surprised to have her as an ally. “Agreed?”

“Agreed,” she nodded, as they stepped out of the bookshop together. They would part ways for a short while, then meet up again for breakfast. Danny pushed back the fabric of his v-neck, crimson-colored sweater, worn over a pale yellow button up with beige slacks (his mother knew he owned jeans but he still didn’t often wear them in her company) to check his watch. He confirmed the next rendezvous with Claudia, and began strolling along Pearl Street with the eventual aim of procuring a bouquet of flowers to give to his mother. He had time for a few distractions first, should he encounter any.
