I might make an exception

Despite wanting to interject something several times, Holland managed to remain silent throughout Claudia’s explanation. They wouldn’t have argued that their identity was completely irrelevant to Claudia, although they would have pointed out that the effect they’d had on her recent experiences had mostly been because of her reactions to them. If Claudia hadn’t attacked Danny and then Holland over the relationship, nothing would have changed about their interactions since October. The dinner at the Dubois house and the fight wouldn’t have happened, and (Holland suspected) neither would the incident with Dade. Holland—and Danny—may have contributed to the impetus, but Claudia had chosen the courses of action that had considerably affected her experiences of her own free will. Still, she wasn’t blaming Holland now, and bringing up the distinction would be counterproductive.

By believing you to be backwards, it made it easier to forget that I like you.” Holland had felt similarly during their fight—the ideals of pureblood society were unprogressive, and in that conversation Claudia had both represented and wielded them—but there was no forgetting in Holland’s reaction. They flat-out didn’t like people who implied they were uncivilized and excused discrimination against them. It could have been encouraging to hear Claudia say that she liked them in the present tense, but Holland wasn’t sure they could return the statement right now.

Danny had suggested that the former friendship between Claudia and Holland was a reason for optimism about potential opposition. That had gone unsubstantiated when he’d told Claudia that they were dating. Claudia had already made it abundantly clear that she didn’t approve of Danny and Holland’s relationship, but that was irrelevant to Holland. It would be convenient to have her approval. They didn’t expect it, though, and they would accept her non-interference just as readily.

“Okay,” Holland said finally. “I think we can agree that we both care about Danny and want him to be happy.” Holland wasn’t sure whether the latter mattered to Claudia, but one could hope. They recalled Claudia telling them she had more concern for Danny than they did. Claudia might not have changed her mind about that since January, but she seemed willing to acknowledge that Holland wasn’t acting without consideration. “So I don’t want to be in conflict with you.” Holland doubted they would ever get along the way they had before this year, but open hostility wasn’t sustainable or acceptable.

“I don’t think there’s anything difficult you need to understand about me,” Holland continued. “I want to be treated with respect. I’m pretty sure that’s what everyone wants.” They didn’t know what she was looking to understand, but Holland was a proponent of doing research and asking an expert when you didn’t know something. Maybe that was what Claudia was doing. “If it’ll help, I can try to answer any specific questions you have.”
