I dropped it

Or it’s a quick way to become unpopular and ostracized.” Holland had nothing reassuring to tell Claudia about that. Yes, that was a possibility, maybe even the most likely outcome, even in this day and age. (Being defeatist wouldn’t get them anything, though; Holland intended to proceed as though they’d be more of a Barbara Gittings than a Harvey Milk.) However they didn’t see why it wouldn’t also lead to some of those people questioning the norms, unless society purebloods were so thoroughly brainwashed into being uninquisitive sheep that they would blindly follow protocol without thinking for themselves. Adherence to rules simply because they were rules was a mark of ignorance, not an admirable demonstration of loyalty and fidelity. Danny and Claudia seemed to have formed different opinions of how open the same people might be to social progress. Holland expected that the actual result would be somewhere between the Dubois siblings’ expectations: neither as ruinous as Claudia predicted, nor as peaceful as Danny hoped.

For whatever reason, Danny thought there was something worth salvaging from pureblood society. Holland was not convinced that anything but dismantling the unjust, stratified system was to the benefit of wizardkind—a definition which necessarily included Muggleborn wizards and witches, not just magic-users from old, rich families—but that was an unrealistic ideal. However, Holland wholeheartedly believed that it was possible for them to make positive change, on a small scale if not a large one. And they were committed to trying because it was important to Danny—not just important, but something he maintained was central to who he was.

Some communities do not thrive on equality.

Holland disagreed. The only people who did not feel that equality created thriving conditions were the ones who had the most power before a change was made. The rich, straight, white, cisgender men of the world were threatened by equality, which was why they took such a reactionary view of anything done to improve the lot of the less privileged; anyone with a more marginalized identity prospered from equality. Holland suspected that Claudia’s definition of ‘thriving’ matched the current conditions exactly, despite not including social mobility or self-determination.

Danny had expressed that one of Claudia’s concerns was how their relationship would affect her chances at securing a betrothal. She seemed not to have considered that in a more equal community, she would be given consideration separate from her brother’s choices, or that the inheritance might already have been equitably split between the two of them, or that she might be made the Dubois family’s heir under the present circumstances. Holland refrained from pointing out these probabilities.

“How do you know this one won’t, when it hasn’t tried?” they asked. Their question was rhetorical, and they continued before Claudia had an opportunity to respond to it. “If the problem is that this just isn’t done, then we’ll make it something that’s done. You’re probably right about our upcoming opponents,” Holland said. It seemed unlikely that pureblood patriarchs and socialites would attempt to duel them—but because of Claudia, if that happened, Holland would be ready for it. They thought they had arguments for damn near every challenge, too. “I guess it’s good we’ve had practice. I don’t think I’ll be fazed by anything they can throw at me now.”
