Because... Well you don't have to, I guess.

The first thing Russell noticed was that the person to interrupt him this time was the youngest Farnon. However, far from this bringing relief that he hadn’t inadvertently shared spell theory with a Muggle, he was instead immediately captivated by the second being he noticed, which was the container Dade was carrying. Which held a rodent. A gorgeous little guy, larger than Jaws and not all black, either, but a mix of darker and lighter patches, with big fuzzy ears, and oh dear his eyes were spontaneously watering. He couldn’t help it. It had been less than a year since his mouse passed on; unlike in childhood, when the memory of one pet had been more or less easily swept over by the next, he had been so attached to Jaws over the course of his long (short) life that he couldn’t bear to replace him. He was currently mouse-less. Coming basically face to face with a surprise rodent, who would be living with him in Cetus now if the carrying cage was anything to go by, was a lot to process.

“Rose said...”

Welp, his eyes were pretty much instantly dry again. Half-listening to Dade, half-staring over his shoulder at the third being he’d noticed - which just so happened to be Rose herself (because of course she was right there) (why wouldn’t she have followed him on the first day he’d decided to go out aboveground) (welp again) sitting on a bench opposite and staring at him in a manner that clearly indicated life in post-secondary hadn’t worn down her intimidation tactics - Russell tucked a piece of grass in to hold the page and closed his book, fingers running in anxious circles along its spine. He couldn’t decide where to focus his attention, and dividing his attention wasn’t practical. On the one hand there was Dade, who was quiet and studious and started a fire once but otherwise he had little opinion of. On the other hand there was a sweet little rodent just begging for snuggles. On one or possibly both feet there was Rose, no extra explanation necessary. This was less than ideal. It was unideal. It was--

“Yeah, that’s my job,” he agreed, because seconding the description of his Head Boy role was easy even if the role itself, at least in context with him, was incomprehensible. But uh. Now what? Reading the awkwardness that wasn’t actually all coming from him for once, the Californian rubbed the scruff on the side of his cheek while he considered it a moment. Dade’s demeanour had him suspicious that, were it Dade’s choice, the younger boy would not have approached him at all. Meanwhile the reference to Rose had him suspicious that she was up to something. What that could possibly be escaped him, and after another moment wasted trying to come up with an answer, Russell tentatively offered, “What’s Claudia doing to bother you? I’ll do my best to help.” Claudia had been on the other end of Dade’s fire, he vaguely remembered, and if her ‘bothering’ was some kind of vengeance she would almost be justified, but Rose might kill him if that was the conclusion he came to, so hopefully not. His gaze drifted to the big-eared rodent again, and he couldn’t hold back a small grin at its twitching nose.

  • Why should I tell you? - Dade Farnon, Sun Jul 22 17:57
The pet store was more crowded than it probably should have been, and Dade wasn’t really enjoying being there. But after his letter to Rose, his sister had demanded he come to Pearl Street... more
    • Because... Well you don't have to, I guess. - Russell, Tue Jul 24 15:17
      • Well that was easy - Dade, Wed Jul 25 15:52
It seemed like Russell was distracted by the rat in Dade’s carrying cage. It was a pretty cute rat, Dade wasn’t denying that, but Russell was a seventh-year and Dade would have figured a seventh-year ... more
        • I made something easier? Wow that's new - Russell, Wed Jul 25 22:37
Looking away from the rodent again, he listened with increasing concern as Dade described how exactly Claudia was bothering him. He couldn’t say he was surprised, but he also couldn’t say he wasn’t.... more
          • There's a first time for everything - Dade, Thu Jul 26 11:06
Okay, maybe Russell wasn’t a complete idiot. Unlike some people (Marley) he seemed to be taking Dade seriously. Considering his position at the school, Russell was a good person to be taking Dade... more
            • And what a surprise it is! - Russell, Sun Aug 5 00:18
To his great and clear surprise, thin eyebrows having both jumped up his forehead with the approximate speed at which he preferred to jump out of the way of Marissa’s uncomfortably talkative sister... more
              • Well, what kind of surprise is it? - Dade, Wed Aug 8 12:44
It seemed like Russell was super into holding the rat, so Dade opened the carrying cage and waited for the older boy to scoop up the little critter inside. First, Russell let the rat sniff him and... more
                • A warm'n'fuzzy one - Russell, Tue Aug 14 21:58
Russell nodded understandingly. Names were tricky and he certainly hadn’t expected Dade to have already picked one out. Even asking the younger boy if he had any name ideas when he had presumably... more
                  • That seems like a nice surprise - Dade, Thu Aug 16 19:55
The idea of a rat rescue had never occurred to Dade. He supposed it kind of made sense. There were rescues for dogs and cats, so it stood to reason that people would want to give up a rat or... more
