There's a first time for everything

Okay, maybe Russell wasn’t a complete idiot. Unlike some people (Marley) he seemed to be taking Dade seriously. Considering his position at the school, Russell was a good person to be taking Dade seriously if there was one. Maybe this had been a good idea of Rose’s, after all. Dade sneaked a peek at his sister; she hadn’t moved from her position on the bench: fishnet-covered arms crossed, leaning back, glaring emphatically in Russell’s direction. Geez. What had this kid done to piss Rose off that much? Maybe he wasn’t a complete idiot in terms of how he was handling the situation with Claudia, but he clearly had done something completely idiotic and crossed Rose in doing it. Didn’t the seventh-year know that Rose was not a person to piss off? Geez.

Anyway, the part where the older boy said that people who hated him would cheer if Claudia attacked him was not at all reassuring, but at least it was more productive than everyone who said Claudia wouldn’t attack him. It looked like Russell was pretty aware of Rose behind Dade, since Dade wasn’t sure what else would make him wince like that, but he still invited Dade to sit and Dade took him up on the invitation, settling the rat safely in its carrying cage next to him. It immediately started sniffing at the walls, putting up its paws against the wall of the carrier. Okay, that was pretty cute. This pet thing might be growing on him.

The space between the two Ceti was quiet for a few minutes, presumably as Russell thought of solutions to Dade’s problems. This was an unexpectedly helpful situation already; having at least one person in authority who seemed to be on his side made Dade feel more hopeful.

Then - a suggestion that Dade thought was absolutely brilliant came out of Russell’s mouth. A sneakoscope! How had he never thought of that before? A sneakoscope was perfect. It would go off around anyone who was untrustworthy, so not only would Dade know they were being untrustworthy but they would know he knew, so they would stop scheming because they would know he was on to them. Perfect! And he could even use it as proof against Claudia, because if his sneakoscope was going off near Claudia and Connor, it was clear objective proof that they were up to something. He could take that to Mr. Tennant or even Headmaster Morgan, and they’d have to take him seriously. It was such a good idea. Rose would be pleased, Dade was sure.

“That’s a brilliant idea,” Dade said, much more cheerful than he usually was. “And I didn’t know you used to have a mouse. “Do you erm. Do you want to hold him?” he gestured at the rat. “He doesn’t have a name or anything yet but he looks like he’s friendly. I like his little ears.” It was more of a conversation than Dade had really had with anyone for awhile. He shot another glance at Rose, and although she was still looking in their direction, the look seemed (from this distance, anyway) to be more curious than murder-y.

Looking away from the rodent again, he listened with increasing concern as Dade described how exactly Claudia was bothering him. He couldn’t say he was surprised, but he also couldn’t say he wasn’t.... more

        • Well, what kind of surprise is it? - Dade, Wed Aug 8 12:44
It seemed like Russell was super into holding the rat, so Dade opened the carrying cage and waited for the older boy to scoop up the little critter inside. First, Russell let the rat sniff him and... more
          • A warm'n'fuzzy one - Russell, Tue Aug 14 21:58
Russell nodded understandingly. Names were tricky and he certainly hadn’t expected Dade to have already picked one out. Even asking the younger boy if he had any name ideas when he had presumably... more
            • That seems like a nice surprise - Dade, Thu Aug 16 19:55
The idea of a rat rescue had never occurred to Dade. He supposed it kind of made sense. There were rescues for dogs and cats, so it stood to reason that people would want to give up a rat or... more
