That doesn't sound fair

“You do yourself a disservice,” Alena replied smiling, “I think your dress is delightful.” Indeed, Claudia was very aesthetically pleasing, Alena thought enviously, it was no surprise she received the attention of so many boys with Connor Farnon, Caleb Taylor, and Nolan all frequent companions of the older girl- did Nolan they all seek to court Claudia? Alena brushed a gold curl behind her ear suddenly very concerned with her own appearance. What Claudia must think of her! Although she been pleased with the lavender blouse and felt a thrill of excitement when donning the denim jeans that morning in Claudia’s company she was beginning to rethink the decision to be so reckless.

She bristled a little at Claudia’s quiet disapproval, unsure how to take it. She was used to reprimands directed at her without restraint, sharp tongues were common amongst the Adlers, and despite the brief humiliation inflicted by the verbal rebukes, Alena found it reassuring to know where she stood. She never had to replay conversations with her family to find their motivations or see where she had gone wrong. Everything was spread out before her in black and white. She could not say the same about her interactions at RMI. Claudia, however was very polite, and Alena was impressed with how she conducted herself in such a grown-up manner as though she was already the lady running a great house. “Thank you for your concern, I will take it into consideration,” Alena replied seriously, “I admit I was uncertain about it but I thought it best to-” Alena struggled to find the words to explain why she had needed to take this risk. She did not want Claudia to get the wrong impression of her. “To test it out and allow my curiosity to be satisfied. I am not certain I will continue to don the attire in future but I do, now, have a greater understanding of its appeal."

Alena’s gut told her that Claudia was likely correct and she had acted foolishly. If there wasn't anything wrong with it why had she gone to such lengths to conceal her little experiment from her family? Why had she not consulted with Benjamin? She normally told him everything (although that wasn’t as true as it had been-she had not, for example, informed him that her interest in Nolan went beyond friendship) which was a clear sign that ‘playing muggle’ was dangerous and undignified. With this in mind and possessing an admiration of Claudia’s style, Alena was only too happy to accept an invitation to shop together. “I would like that very much,” she said, discarding her coffee mug on the table, ”I am not well acquainted with Pearl Street, do you know of any establishments that would suit our needs?”

Alena’s assessment of her dress as ‘delightful’ was not inaccurate - perhaps the fourth year had some idea of fashion after all - but Claudia did not always necessarily wish to embody that particular ... more
