To his great and clear surprise, thin eyebrows having both jumped up his forehead with the approximate speed at which he preferred to jump out of the way of Marissa’s uncomfortably talkative sister Kit and her uncomfortably… uncomfortable pet spider (or maybe ‘uncomfortably comfortable’ was more appropriate, since it often looked to be far too much at home perched on top of the girl), Dade’s reaction to his suggestion was positive. Weird. It didn’t prompt in him the usual weird reflex, though, which was more of a suspicion mixed with resignation that of course others were acting or treating him weirdly because he was weirder, and Russell was equally surprised to realize that he was feeling a bit optimistic about this. Another weird turn of events.

Weird, but true. It was pleasing to think that he had actually helped Dade, might actually be able to earn his Head Boy badge even if it was an after-the-fact credit. And Dade having a more positive opinion of him couldn’t hurt in getting Rose off his back. Compulsively he glanced back over the younger boy, and immediately looked away again upon seeing that the recent graduate was still staring in their direction. It felt like she was able to bore right through his eyes - probably not accurate, since they were a fair distance apart and his sunglass lenses were quite darkly tinted - but then again it was Rose, and who knew what she was capable of?

“Glad you think so.” He was very briefly tempted to add in something like I guess Rose was right to direct you to me, but only very very briefly. Better not to test his luck. He wasn’t the best at pulling off jokes, anyways, and if Dade thought he meant it seriously, he might tell Rose, and Rose would overreact and hex him for thinking he was better than her, which absolutely was not true but there would be no point arguing if it came down to that. So. Instead he turned to the rest of what Dade had said, which was a hundred times more appealing. “Really? I’d love to, thanks for offering,” Russell returned sincerely, unable to hold back a grin, which made it a little easier to ignore the Return of the Watery Eyes.

Setting his book beside him on the grass, Russell waited for the boy to open his carrying cage and then eased one hand inside, bony fingers curling to present the rodent with optimal sniffing surface. The critter took a few good sniffs, whiskers tickling his palm, but looked hesitant to scramble up his arm the way Jaws used to. But the Californian had some experience with brand-new pets, and dipped his other hand inside to scoop the little guy up in a single, gentle motion. It began almost immediately scrambling around the space between his palms, and his grin widened. “He’s sweet. And curious!” he added with a chuckle as the rodent stuck its nose, and soon after its entire head, under his wristband. “Do you have any name ideas yet, Dade? My mouse was Jaws,” he shared. “Little black guy with a big appetite.” Without prompting, his memory pulled up Maverick’s shark-head statue, currently set up in the corner of his dorm, and he let out a quiet sigh before returning to the warm body in his hands. “And you won’t fit all the way through there, buddy, but good luck,” Russell added, nudging it back down before it got itself stuck between the leather band and his wrist.

  • There's a first time for everything - Dade, Thu Jul 26 11:06
Okay, maybe Russell wasn’t a complete idiot. Unlike some people (Marley) he seemed to be taking Dade seriously. Considering his position at the school, Russell was a good person to be taking Dade... more

      • Well, what kind of surprise is it? - Dade, Wed Aug 8 12:44
It seemed like Russell was super into holding the rat, so Dade opened the carrying cage and waited for the older boy to scoop up the little critter inside. First, Russell let the rat sniff him and... more

Russell nodded understandingly. Names were tricky and he certainly hadn’t expected Dade to have already picked one out. Even asking the younger boy if he had any name ideas when he had presumably... more
          • That seems like a nice surprise - Dade, Thu Aug 16 19:55
The idea of a rat rescue had never occurred to Dade. He supposed it kind of made sense. There were rescues for dogs and cats, so it stood to reason that people would want to give up a rat or... more
