If that's possible for anyone, it's possible for you

Kit took a seat on a conveniently empty bench, and Myffi sat down beside her, watching the energetic redhead as she corrected Myfanwy’s guess. “Oh, right, okay,” Myffi said when Kit was done, her tone indicating that she understood, but she was reluctant to make explicit the conclusions she had drawn just in case she still hadn’t succeeded in grasping the right end of the wand. She had guessed that Kit’s parents were looking to adopt, although adopted children didn’t technically come from the government, and they might have decided to foster a child, and that would still sort of have the effect of making Kit the big sister. Anyway, the point was that Kit thought she was going to be a big sister, so that’s what was relevant.

“No, I’m the baby sister,” Myfanwy answered with a smile. She had been about to add ‘like you,’ but she didn’t know how Kit would respond to being called the baby, and anyway this was about her being the big sister, so it wouldn’t have been a productive comment to make, anyway. “I have an older sister, like you do,” she elaborated instead. “Marissa is five years older than you, right?” There were five academic years between the Kendrick girls, which didn’t necessarily equate to five calendar years, but it was as close a guess as Myffi could make without knowing Kit or Marissa’s birthday. “Cledan is my big sister, she’s seven years older than me. We look quite a lot alike.” Myfanwy was taller now, but they had the same hair, eyes, body shape, face shape, straight teeth and pale skin. Cledan usually wore contacts instead of glasses and had a nose piercing, but the sisters even dressed quite similarly. The age gap meant that until recently nobody had any trouble telling them apart, but it had happened once over the summer, and Myffi expected the potential for that to happen more was increasing as they both got older.

“It’s a big responsibility being influential to younger family members,” Myffi advised, watching a pigeon as it hopped and pecked its way towards her feet. “There are some younger children on the commune where my family lives,” she said, “and they look up to the older kids to figure out how to behave.” It bore some similarities to being Head Girl, except at RMI everyone knew who she was, and on the commune she was the girl who only stayed with them over the summer and for a fortnight at Christmas. She definitely preferred living at RMI, and that was something to keep in mind as the seventh year thought about what she might do after graduation: continuing to live on the commune full time probably would not be an ideal solution. “So you’re going to be really important to this new kid.” That could be a lot to take on board for someone who had spent their whole life being the youngest. Myffi sought to understand whether Kit would need any support in dealing with this change in family circumstances. “Are you excited?” she asked.

“Not having,” Kit corrected her older friend, throwing herself suddenly on a bench. “That’s how come they don’t know if they’re getting a baby or a real kid yet. The government has a buncha kids that ... more
