If it's not, then I sure got scammed

What did you know? Eye contact did something. The girl actually approached him. Huh, that was a heck of a lot easier than he had thought it might be. Not that he had really had a specific goal in mind; he’d long decided that goals often led to disappointment and it was better just to roll with things as they happened. Her sitting beside him and striking up conversation was absolutely something he could roll with.

Ruben’s English was kind of rusty, though, so there was a bit of an extended pause while he worked out an answer using Real Grammar. Real Grammar was like a whole other country compared to the half-assed grammar he used when hanging out with the Russian and Bulgarian crowd at Durmstrang. He could talk a lot faster that way, but considering how dumb his roommates had sounded when he tried teaching them his language... Well, he’d learned English in school, so he surely wouldn’t sound that bad, but he assumed that half-assed grammar would still make him sound dumber than he was. Might as well try to avoid that. Especially in front of a girl who was both friendly and pretty.

Jaha, then you are in luck! I am both an adventurous eater-” (was eater really a noun? It must be. She had used it first) “-and also I feel more close to cats than other animals.” His accent, combined with the fact that the initial affirmative had slipped out in Swedish, probably gave him away quickly as a foreigner. Ruben wasn’t used to being a foreigner. But he didn’t care enough to try blending in with other areas of life and saw no reason why that shouldn’t stay the same here. As long as he paid enough attention to Real Grammar that he sounded moderately intelligent, that was good enough.

“Do you want to try?” Still grinning, Ruben held out the cone to her, one dark-blonde eyebrow raising daringly. “It has changed my full perspective of ice-cream. And you need not worry about getting too friendly with me, see,” he added. Being the type of person to eat ice-cream literally straight from one side to the other, and having only recently started working on it, there was a fair amount still untouched, which he now turned around the cone to show her. The implication was self-explanatory, he assumed.
