The problem with winter in Colorado was that going outside meant she had to wear pants. Francine hated pants, and she didn’t use that word lightly. The h-a-t-e word, but darn it, she really meant it. She liked her flowy skirts with bright colors and bold patterns, the way they swirled around her, masking her body with a poofy form. She couldn’t hide her chicken legs in pants; either they were tight and showed the exact size, or they were baggy and showed how much extra space was clearly there. A lose-lose.

The only advantage of winter was the the winter hat. Francine liked wearing winter hats, particularly the ones that had little puff balls on top and long strings on the sides. They were the cutest, decoratively. But any solid winter hat or beanie was nice. Despite not being a lot by itself, a hat could go a long way toward quieting her messy blonde hair. It always wanted to be everywhere she didn’t want it, so a hat was a nice limitation.

She was going out into the throes of January on Pearl Street, so she bundled nicely. Today’s hat did not feature strings and was styled more like a beanie, and its periwinkle coloration matched her gloves and scarf exactly. Her winter coat, fluffy enough to have warmth and disguise her shape without turning her into a complete marshmallow, was a charcoal grey, and it stretched down far enough to at least cover her thighs, otherwise highlighted by her light blue jeans. Despite the pastel pink uggs with ribbon bows on the ankles, it was easily Francine’s most boring outfit.

Despite being unsatisfied with her appearance, however, the Cetus was on her way to meet up with Sorsha and Camille for a girls’ day of shopping on Pearl Street. Sorsha was her enemy turned best friend, the only Lyra in the seventh year class. At this point, Francine couldn’t exactly remember why they had ever been enemies, but she was so happy to be friends now instead. She wasn’t one for negative feelings when they could be avoided. Camille, a sixth year in Francine’s own House, she was not as close of friends with, but they had always gotten along pretty well. Camille mostly hung out with Elijah, who Francine also happened to like, but she figured it would be good for the younger Cetus to get some girl time in.

In a bizarre twist of usual events, Francine discovered that she was actually running early for once. She decided to go on down the elevator ahead of her friends and get warm drinks with which to greet them. She was just heading back with a drink-carrier when she saw the bookstore doors opening. “Hey!” she called from a distance.

“I got a mocha latte, a vanilla tea, and a peppermint hot chocolate,” Francine announced when she was closer. “Because I didn’t know what you guys would want. So I got three different things that I happen to like, so I’m good with whatever you don’t want.” She grinned happily. “So where do you want to shop first?”
