Ooo, privyet. She pushed away the Russian that was trying to slip out, only because she wasn’t entirely fluent yet. Papa didn’t speak it well, but Grandmama did, and so did a lot of her cousins. Kaye couldn’t place the stranger’s dialect, but the fourth year thought it was neat. When Papa said she was going to a school that was international, he really meant it. There was no way to know this guy was a student without asking him, of course, but the ice cream that probably wasn’t from a Muggle shop was a good clue.
Or maybe Boulder was secretly all magic and she just didn’t know that.
“An adventurer who likes cats,” Kaye grinned, “My kind of human.” She still couldn’t place where he was from, which didn’t particularly matter. She was just curious. Kaye at least recognized that asking someone where they were from could end up being weird. Since she didn’t have friends yet, coming off as xenophobic or racist was something she’d try to avoid.
“Do you want to try?”
She blinked her blue eyes. So the guy didn’t care about sharing germs with a stranger. That was interesting. Perhaps it was a little weird, but so was his ice cream. She wrinkled her nose a little when he moved it towards her, but Kaye wasn’t one to back down from a challenge. She preferred at least attempting the challenge and living with regret later.
“Okay, but I warn you, I might spit out.” Kaye leaned in and tried the bizarre tuna concoction. True to her word, she pulled back almost right away and spat it out over the side of the outdoor bench. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. Very attractive, Kaye. Good job. She let herself have two seconds of embarrassment before popping her head back up and wrinkling her nose again. “Sorry. Tuna is not my thing, apparently. But now you don’t have to share with me, so that’s good, right?”
She looked around and wondered if she should go get a different ice cream cone. She really wanted to get this taste out of her mouth. “Do you usually try experimental ice cream, or do you sometimes go for a traditional chocolate or vanilla?”
