Not often

“Yes,” Camilla said, without much deliberation, and Danny paused consuming his refreshments so he could pay her the attention this confession deserved. He waved off her apology about using the word he didn't like; they really had to come up with something less prejudiced in its connotations to refer to that particular culture. The culture that revered Camilla’s ancestry but condemned her for being born outside of matrimony. She was right: it wasn't fair, and she had every reason to not believe in the same ideals with which Dardanius had been raised.

He shifted a little uncomfortably when Camilla asserted that the type of boys her mother wanted her to marry - boys like him - would be bothered by her surname. He would like to believe that it wouldn't matter to him, that he would be an exception, but was that true? Danny intended to uphold his family’s ideals and marry someone they deemed appropriate. He wondered if a girl was in Camilla’s position, with an acceptable linage but not the family connections that ought to have accompanied it, whether the family would allow it. He didn't think he would fight their decision. Did that make him as detestable as those who voluntarily identified as Pureblood?

If he did feel trapped, there were options open to him. Not good options, perhaps, but they existed. Yet he couldn't imagine any scenario that would drive him to betray his family, who had raised him and provided for him, granted him so much opportunity and afforded him every advantage available to them. He couldn't conceive of abandoning Claudia, of disappointing his parents, or never seeing any of them again. Even independence was an unknown experience to Dardanius Dubois, whose house elf served him oysters on silver dishes. What were Camilla's options, he wondered.

Camilla laughed, and Danny knew she was trying to lighten the atmosphere but he couldn't bring himself to join in. “I hope you find a way to be happy,” he said sincerely. He was embarrassed by his society that made Camilla feel the way she did. He thought for a split second that there were reasons courtship before marriage was not often highly regarded in his society, but then he realised this would deny Camilla her existence, and he felt sick with himself. “The more I think about these traditions, the less sense they make,” he said, shaking his head a little before diverting his attention back to his drink. He didn't know what else to say.

Hazel-eyes locked with Danny’s eyes and before she could actually think about what was going to her mind, “Yes,” she answered simply. Camilla hadn't thought about the possibility of Danny throwing... more

      • Oh - Camilla, Wed Apr 12 11:59
Camilla leaned forward and gently squeezed Danny’s hand. “Just because I am meant to live under ideals I don't believe in doesn't mean I am not happy,” she clarified. She smiled and continued, “I am... more
