Connor had replied that he was looking forward to their conversation. It had been one of the many positive occurrences of the second part of midterm; Claudia’s parents had hosted a New Year’s Eve party, at which she'd had a considerably more relaxing time than at the Christmas Eve ball. She'd purchased a couple more outfits, including the one she had selected to wear that day: a plum-colored, finely knitted dress that fit her figure from her wrists to her hips, then flowed more freely to her knees. Intricate golden flowers with trailing vines were embroidered on each shoulder, so she’d chosen her gold shimmer eyeliner and nail polish, too. Her mid-calf boots and jacket were both tan leather with added warning charms, protecting her from the Rocky Mountain winter as she hurried to the coffee shop.

She saw Connor immediately, but ordered herself a peppermint hot chocolate before joining him. He turned as she said his name, and she smiled before seating herself neatly opposite. “Good afternoon,” she returned his greeting. “I'm very well, thank you.” Honestly her stomach felt uncomfortable because of the potential something she might be about to do to her best friend. She was hoping the peppermint might help to settle her insides (the cashier said it would be a minute so someone would bring the drink over when it was done), although she was already feeling better being in the coffee shop with Connor, rather than just anticipating the meeting and trying to work out how it would go. “How are you?”

Now what? Unsure whether to say anything further, Claudia unfastened her jacket and slid it from her shoulders, turning to drape it over the back of her chair. She was almost warm enough inside without it, and the hot drink would help, when it arrived. “I wondered,” she began, “if you’d thought about-” Claudia cut herself off as her drink was brought over and placed on the table in front of her. The third year thanked the server politely, and took an experimental sip. It was too sweet, but then coffee shop beverages always were.

Aware she'd already started, Claudia wasn't sure how to continue. She didn't want to propose to Connor that they should be - what? A couple? In a relationship? Dating? She wasn't sure what the right terminology was for the circumstance she was hoping to achieve. She just wanted to make sure she kept Connor to herself. That wasn't unreasonable, was it? Surely there was some sort of label to attach to that level of emotion - there seemed to be labels for everything else. She would settle, however, for anything that explicitly placed her in Connor's presence, and Marley out of it. She smiled, hoping maybe Connor would correctly interpret what she had hinted at in her letter to him. It was subtle, but he was smart, sometimes. It would be convenient if now was one of those times.
