It wasn't, particularly

“Rather pleased to be back at school,” Connor admitted in response to Claudia’s query about his well-being. He did not elaborate; he felt no need to burden Claudia with the trials of his midterm. They were very trivial, anyway. Connor knew that fights between siblings were normal, and he certainly did not want to admit to the garbage that Marley had been sending him. He had considered burning it but in the end had just shoved it into the bottom of his trunk. Except the cylinders. He’d left the cylinders at home, still unsure as to what they were other than a menace. He knew Claudia shared at least some of his opinions on Marley, but Connor had not, in their pre-Midterm conversation, admitted the extent to which he loathed their yearmate. It might distress Claudia, and that was something that Connor did not want to do.

Claudia began to ask him a question and Connor leaned forward attentively, making sure not to bump into his mug of hot chocolate. However, before his friend could finish, a server interrupted her with with her own mug of hot chocolate. Connor smiled. Hot chocolate was an excellent choice for such cool weather. Other students might have preferred a butterbeer, but Connor wasn’t a fan of the drink. He found it to be too sweet with a strange aftertaste he always wanted to wash away as soon as possible.

Once the server left, Connor expected Claudia to finish what she had been saying. He smiled expectantly at her. But she didn’t say anything else, just smiled at him. Connor paused, suddenly nervous. Had he missed what she was saying? That seemed impossible - she was sitting right across from him. But perhaps he had, anyway? He hazarded a guess.

“About your proposal?” Connor asked, then pressed on so it wouldn’t look as though he hadn’t been paying attention if he had missed something. “I was hoping you would provide me with more details as to its specific nature,” he added. Surely he hadn’t missed that much. Unless this was a girl thing that he didn’t understand by nature of girls being so differently-minded than boys were. That much he knew, from lessons in Cultural Studies and the talk his own father had given him on his birthday. He knew there were still some things he was not yet privy to about relationships between the sexes, but Connor was sure that he would be told in due time.
