Already feeling the need to leave [Kaye]

It was the second day back at RMI, and already Ruben was bored. Over the past twenty-four hours, he had knocked a Bludger around the pitch, scared off some tiny firstie who’d wandered too close, and then showed off his physical prowess even further by doing a full-body workout while still on his broom, including stretches and chin-ups. (He had, shortly after being recruited to the Aquila team, discovered this alternative use of a broomstick. Quidditch was a stupid sport, but at least he could make use of his airtime with some mixed strength and agility training.) Furthermore, he’d rearranged all his furniture the way he liked it, since apparently the elves had tidied the dorms while he was away, as well as sized up the new kid in Aquila, casually threatened to wallop some younger student whose name was not relevant for him to remember, and even managed to make it to his classes.

Even Defense Against the Dark Arts. Which sucked on multiple levels, the first one being the lame ‘defense’ bit, but apparently was going to suck even more now since their new professor was some too-smiley woman who somehow seemed even less stable than that weird hippy in Lyra. Who the hell had decided that she was an appropriate teacher? Ruben was willing to bet she knew absolutely nothing about the Dark Arts. He could definitely teach the class better, and look better doing it, too. Pfft.

All this considered and Ruben had low hopes for the rest of the year, so quickly decided it would obviously be a better use of time to just hang out with Kaye. Especially since, y’know, she was finally out of hospital and stuff. Being in the same House made it easy for the blonde to just flop on the couch after his Ancient Runes class and wait for her to show up in the commons. As soon as Ruben spotted her, he got to his feet, holding his arms out as if to block her access. “Not today!” he announced, referencing the many times they’d claimed the couch for a lazy hour or two. “I am getting out of here, and I need you to keep company with me because most everyone else is less tolerate-able.”

To his great satisfaction, they were soon on Pearl Street. Not without the usual chaos, of course, but Kaye catching him trying to steal back his lighter while they were riding the elevator and reacting quote-unquote appropriately didn’t slow them down too long. Not that Ruben was exactly moving quickly, either. He just wanted to be rid of the school and pretend it didn’t exist for a bit, and there was no better way to do that than by sauntering down the street, kicking up snow, and challenging Kaye to a round of who can one-up each other the best. Or possibly one-down was a better name for it. Whatever. It was always a good time. Who cared about semantics?

“It is hard to make eye-contact when you are always wearing a mask,” he deadpanned at one point, although there was a glint of a smirk in his (non-eyeliner’d) blue eyes. This became much more pronounced as he switched topics abruptly. “Also, I am hungry. Pick someplace.” Ruben flapped a hand around aimlessly, although a part of him was vaguely wondering whether she would interpret this as a date once food was on the table… heh. Anyways. Kaye hadn’t mentioned her date comment at the hospital yet, but he assumed it’d come up sooner than later, though hopefully later as he still wasn’t exactly certain how to respond if she did ask him out again. “I assume that you have not been stuck on hospital food long enough to have forgotten what good foods exist here?”
