With less transparency, then

“I was hoping you would provide me with more details as to its specific nature,” Connor said, disappointingly. Claudia stifled a sigh as she continued to sip her drink. She had hoped he would reach conclusions all by himself but obviously she was going to have to put the work in here; that wasn't a particularly inspiring omen for the future, should this plan come to fruition.

Licking her lips, Claudia placed her cup carefully back down and wondered how best to phrase this delicately, so she didn't sound too forward. That wasn't at all proper, and she didn't think Connor would appreciate her being brazen. “I would not object,” she said slowly, “if you had a desire to progress our friendship to something more closely resembling a non-platonic arrangement.” It was still unsatisfyingly vague, and yet still more suggestive than she would have preferred. Finding the right balance between making her desires understood and not appearing presumptuous or demanding was practically impossible.

The term 'non-platonic arrangement' was not ideal, as it left too much open to interpretation. Claudia expected she would not necessarily be opposed to physical contact, but that was not an integral part of her suggestion, and there was no real way to convey this to Connor without being explicit. While Claudia’s self-confidence had progressed in leaps and bounds over the past year (during the last month in particular) she was still not comfortable in being forthright about things that were personal to her. Besides, it was the role of the male in a couple to propose any sort of relationship alterations; it was very progressive of Claudia to have said as much as she had. Worse than Connor rejecting her suggestion of exclusivity (which he might do - she had no reason to suspect he held any interest in her beyond friendship - and she had rationally accepted this as a potential outcome of the conversation, but she couldn't deny she would feel hurt by rejection) would be her forwardness repulsing him to an extent that their friendship became in jeopardy. Regardless of any reference to Marley whatsoever, Claudia highly valued Connor's friendship and would be immensely disappointed if she caused its collapse.

“I believe it is more proper to allow you to designate the more specific details,” she delivered some of his own words back to him.
