She waited with very well - if she said so herself - concealed apprehension for Connor to formulate his reply. By wrapping her hands around her mug she was able to distract herself from inflicting any damage to, or with, her fingers or their nails, and her lack of fidgeting made it very easy to actually listen to and process what Connor was saying, rather than just hearing the words without any semantic attachment.

When he claimed to not be strictly opposed, Claudia felt some degree of pleasure. She hardly expected him to immediately acquiesce and proclaim hitherto unspoken emotional attachment to her, and she would not hold any respect for him if he did, so just to hear that he wasn’t opposed to the notion was mildly satisfying. She should have expected that he would feel the entire scenario improprietous, so while his eventual answer was disappointing, it wasn’t surprising. She couldn’t help but feel affronted he had suggested she would do anything unseemly, which was the reason for the frown she wore as she replied, “I’m hardly proposing an elopement, Connor.”

She was beginning to wonder whether she should continue to pursue this radical plan. Naturally Connor was taken aback, so perhaps Claudia should take that as a polite rejection and abandon her plan. After all, if he was against any sort of non-platonic arrangement, then he probably wouldn’t agree to one with Marley, either. On the other hand, if Claudia and Connor were to be considered a couple by their peers, Claudia would still save Marley the rejection, and Connor from any potential future interference from the Lyra, as well as the completely obsolete satisfaction she would experience from knowing that actually someone did like her enough to voluntarily be publicly aligned with her. She took another sip of her seasonal drink, sighed, and then addressed the issue at hand.

“I understand your hesitation,” she began, “and I’m certainly not obligating you to indulge me in any manner you consider unseemly,” she intentionally repeated the word he had used to incense her. Slowly and delicately, she continued, “I merely have considered that we might be approaching the age at which more intimate acquaintanceships might be palpable - certainly our peers have mentioned entering into informal arrangements -” (that didn’t count as telling Connor that Marley was interested, she was quite sure of it) “and I felt compelled to express to you that I am not in opposition to the concept of promoting an explicit exclusivity of our friendship.” And then she took a very long sip of her hot chocolate because that was almost as nerve-wracking as asking Jordan to dance in front of everyone, and Claudia would very much like to take everything back and return to hiding in solitude in her room, away from everyone else and their ideals of social romanticism. Instead she would sip her hot chocolate and hope that her cheeks weren’t burning too vividly.
