Kaye was grumpy.

Well, furious definitely fit the bill more than grumpy, but she’d had time to stew over how angry she was, and it had fizzled out into an end of the school day sort of grump. Being back at school was exhausting enough. She’d met with the medic and updated the school with her clean bill of health. Having a clean bill really meant that she had a new diet to try (eating enough, blah blah blah, she didn’t pay much attention) and monthly check-ups with the medic, as well as one or two with her own doctor back home in Galveston. There were logistics to work out, but that wasn’t Kaye’s problem.

What was Kaye’s problem, apparently, was Emmett.

The freaking idiot came to visit her over midterm and for some reason decided to treat her like a cancer patient and shave his head in support of her. Kaye wasn’t dying; she didn’t need his pity. He didn’t get much of a chance to explain when she saw him. She stared, shouted some angry curse words, and stormed off. She thought Emmett was one of the nice people at Rocky Mountain International, but it turned out he was just someone else ready to make fun of her and her alopecia.

After she’d grumped her way around the school, hexing random bugs that came across her path because she was Angry and had to do something about it, she’d finally decided to make her way back to the Aquila commons. Maybe she’d take a nice nap on the couch, then get something really filling for dinner. And maybe send Emmett a Howler. No, that was dumb. Ugh, why did people have to be so stupid?

As if the universe were out to get her, Ruben blocked her access to the best sleeping spot in Aquila as soon as she arrived. She made a whining noise and reached out for the couch almost longingly – she was tired and those cushions - but it was Ruben. They bickered briefly, mostly about how fine, Kaye would go, but yes, it was cold to her on Pearl Street and she needed her coat, damn it. Once she’d pulled her faux-fur lined parka over asymmetrical red and black blouse with lacey sleeves, they made their way to Pearl Street.

“This better be good,” Kaye grumped playfully in the elevator, “Since I’m missing my nap for your entertainment.”

And then she smacked away his hand as it approached the back pocket of her jeans, because there was no way he was getting the lighter back with such a lazy move. She grinned and wagged a finger in his face. They walked and bantered some more, which did wonders at making her feel better. Sure, she was still tired, but her grump levels were significantly less. She didn’t completely feel like killing Emmett now. Maybe just lightly maiming.

“It’s about time you mentioned food,” Kaye turned on her heel and immediately started walking towards the restaurant she knew she wanted to eat at. They made you pay upfront, so you couldn’t dine and dash, but the doctors wanted her to eat more or something, so she planned on eating whatever her body said sounded good. Whenever she did skip out on the check, which was very rare, she still left a tip for the waiter. She had standards.

“I assume that you have not been stuck on hospital food long enough to have forgotten what good foods exist here?”

“Oh, don’t worry,” Kaye opened up the door to the Panera and let out a sigh of relief about being inside somewhere warm, “I know good food.” She knew her order by heart: a bread bowl with baked potato soup inside, a side of macaroni and cheese, and a toasted, warm chocolate chip bagel for later. She’d charm it so it stayed the perfect temperature until she ate it, of course, and she’d drink a chai tea latte to wash it all down.

This was a better idea than anger napping in the commons after all.
