“It would make the most sense to set up a regular meeting,” Connor said, straightening his shirt nervously. It did sound pleasant, but it also felt weirdly...high stakes to him. Which was ridiculous, of course, since he was comfortable with this concept specifically because it was not particularly high stakes. It was just two friends with no further expectations and an understanding of their responsibilities. “My schedule is rather fixed.” The only variant was his Saturday mornings; if he was playing Quidditch (ugh) he would be on the Pitch, but if not he would find somewhere less noisy to be. Fortunately, a good number of people in the school enjoyed attending and playing at Quidditch, so Connor often found it easy to locate a quiet spot to sit.

“We should also discuss our uh,” how to phrase this? Connor’s cheeks burned again. “How comfortable we feel in public,” is what he managed. “Of course, we shouldn’t cause a scene,” Connor would be extremely uncomfortable with that, and he imagined that Claudia would as well, “but I wouldn’t be opposed to uh,” another awkward pause. “Holding hands. Sometimes. If that is acceptable to you.” Connor’s embarrassment was clear and he quickly ducked his head to examine his hot chocolate closely. He stirred it with a spoon. He took a sip to calm himself. He snuck a look at Claudia.

Connor sincerely hoped that hadn’t been an inappropriate thing to say. It was just - he would like to give some sort of indication that he and Claudia had extended their friendship, if that was the sort of thing they had decided to do. And they had decided to do that. He hoped it wouldn’t be awkward. He considered Claudia to be a good friend and he would hate to ruin that with this experiment. If he couldn’t speak to Claudia, Connor would have a rather bad time of it, since the only other people he really spoke to were his siblings and Dade was being more obnoxious than usual. And Marley. Oh, Marley. Connor contained a shudder.

Maybe if she notices Claudia and I are more than regular friends, she’ll leave me alone, he thought hopefully.

“I concur,” Claudia smiled, self-satisfied that she had correctly predicted Connor’s reaction. “I hope you don’t think me too bold to suggest Sunday afternoons on Pearl Street.” It was a time when... more
