You're always a good view

He was pleased to hear that her summer was amazing, but Danny was non-plussed by the teasing comment she made in return about his own summer. It really hadn’t been anything spectacular, just plenty of swimming and catching up with his family, plus a few more soirees than usual. It wasn’t until Camilla’s facial expression altered and she brought Rose into the conversation that Danny understood. He couldn’t help it; he laughed.

“There’s nothing to support,” he grinned, feeling ridiculous at having to admit his scheme to Camilla, but also genuinely warmed by the notion that she would be supportive if he really were engaged to Rose. That was really something, considering what had transpired between the two of them. Danny had only felt it in his power to encourage Rose to consider what sort of person she wanted to be. He’s accepted that he was probably going to be her friend regardless of her actions, but he would find it much easier to do that if she weren’t going round physically attacking his other friends. It put him in an awkward position.

“Um,” Danny rubbed the back of his head in an unconscious gesture of nervous embarrassment while he spoke to Camilla’s feet, “I wanted to avoid the pressure of betrothals over the summer. Rose was a red herring,” he admitted. “Everyone got the impression I’m already taken so,” he shrugged awkwardly, “no pressure.”

Bringing the topic up for discussion with his parents definitely ranked as one of the more uncomfortable moments he’d ever had. He’d explained that he liked Rose, but he wasn’t sure about anything yet, and that he really didn’t want to feel pressured into anything… where ‘anything’, obviously, had been a coward’s way of encompassing betrothal, marriage, and any other concept associated with matrimony. It was all true - some of it moreso out of context - but it had done what it needed to, regardless; Danny had, more or less, been left alone by potential suitors and their parents when he’d had Rose at his side. He hadn’t really thought about the more long-term effects, like the grapevine doing its duty and translating to his other friends than Rose was the future Mrs Dubois.

Dardanius finally had the good grace to meet Camilla’s eye to figure out how badly she was laughing at him. As he did so, he noticed that he wasn’t looking up to meet her eye - they were practically level, now. Maybe she’d still tower over him in those boots, but so long as she was in her running gear they were much better matched for height than in previous years. He also noticed that she hadn’t answered his question about EJ, but he wasn’t going to pry. He was, however, going to deflect the attention back away from himself. “So what was so amazing about your summer?”
