A Whole New World

Being home schooled, sports or P.E (Physical Education) as it was known in the UK, was a little odd for both student and teacher. The lessons didn’t come naturally and after a few failed attempts, Satveer and his mother agreed P.E was to be stripped from his home curriculum. Instead Satveer was taught to appreciate and understood the body’s needed for exercise. To look at him, Satveer appeared fit and well kept. However, whilst his good genes and a fast metabolism kept him lean, he never really progressed from exercise-theory and was lacking when it came to physical fitness. In all honesty, sports (magical or otherwise), weren’t really Satveer’s thing. He was happy to observe and be a part-time spectator but he never got very into it. His father on the other hand, was a huge fan of the muggle football team Manchester United. Since moving to America, Satveer’s father had grown increasingly frustrated. He was yet to catch a game at a muggle bar and whilst he did watch the games at home, he missed the social side of it. All the bars played and cared about was American Football, or Fluffy Rugby, as it quickly became known in Satveer’s house.

Compared to India, RMI was a whole new world, with it new Satveer wanted to fit in. This led to Satveer and his family discussed his air born transport choices. After much discussion (most of it from Satveer’s mother), Satveer opted for a broom but to appease his father, he also took the family hand-me-down carpet.
His broom was deep brown in colour with a heavy wood grain and a thick black streak that ran from brush to tip. The black streak tapered out towards the handle and formed an S before dissipating into the wood grain. He didn’t know if it was conventional or not, but Satveer had named his broom, Siri. Siri was so called, because much like the siris wood from which it was made, it was hard and difficult to work with.
His carpet on the other hand was a shallow pile, deep red. It was inlayed with beautiful floral patterns overlaid on geometric shapes. For now, it lay at the side of his bed and to his classmates, it was just another rug. In the mornings, Satveer would scrunch his toes upon it as both the carpet and the action, reminded him of home.

Standing there, immersed in the grandeur of the Quidditch pitch, Satveer felt small. He and his family had spent a lot of time in India. Games like Quidditch weren’t that big over there - flying carpets weren’t generally suited to the sports. As a result, he’d only flown on a broom a handful of times. He’d watched quidditch even less and this Quodpot was a new thing altogether! Nevertheless, Satveer, brimming with false confidence, stood broom in hand listening to coach give a somewhat unenthused introduction to the new flamboyant man. Mr Sheldon Carter. Mr Carter’s theatrics, coupled with a little seemingly unintentional slapstick explosion, pandered to Satveer’s sense of humour and he let out a little giggle. This giggle petered out into a continual smile as Mr Carter continued and introduced the sport of Quodpot – the sport where adults are paid to play hot potato.

The instruction to Have at it came and Satveer was hit an Indescribable feeling. This soon led to an overwhelming feeling of trepidation. Much to his surprise, the thought of carrying an exploding Quod was exciting and didn’t appear to bother him anywhere near as much as having to fly with other people. In his mind, all the other students had been Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling for at least a year on their brooms and could fly circles around him. Satveer was more confident on a carpet – When he was in India, he was a regular carpet passenger. He even had a number of lessons from family members on his carpet. He didn’t understand why people chose broomsticks over weren’t able to ride carpets in western society anymore. Politics aside, balancing was a lot easier on a carpet. And you could carry multiple passengers!

Satveer looked at his broom, “Don’t screw me Siri” he instructed as if his broom were sentient. Satveer liked the idea of being picked last even less than his having to fly and catch a Quod, so he glanced at the student on his right. In the hopes of getting the humour vote, Satveer quipped “If people failing to balance on a broom whilst carrying explosives is your thing, then I’m your guy!”
