So high they made a movie out of it?

On the first day of classes, Connor woke up early and got dressed, selecting a blue polo shirt and khakis to go under his uniform robes. He had noticed that a lot of students - and particularly upper years - tended to eschew their robes, but the serious second-year didn’t think that was appropriate. Why would they have uniform robes if they weren’t to wear them? It made no sense. But to be fair, Connor had noticed that a lot of people here at RMI made very little sense. It was something he was coming to terms with, but certainly not something he was pleased with.

It had been nice to talk to Claudia last night, Connor acknowledged to himself as he pulled on dark sneakers and tied them carefully, making sure to double-knot. He found his wand lying neatly on the dresser where he’d left it the night before and quietly left the room he shared. There was a lump in the other bed that looked like his roommate, and Connor didn’t want to wake him, even though it was time for class soon.

Walking down the stairs to the door of the Cetus Commons, he spotted a brightly colored notice on the bulletin board and went over to look. With an internal groan, Connor read that today, Spellwork was to be held on the Quidditch Pitch. He didn’t know what Professor McKindy was going to make them do today, but whenever lessons were held outside Connor did know that things got messy very quickly. Professor McKindy was an eccentric teacher, often doing things that were out of the ordinary to the point where it was ordinary. And if out of the ordinary became ordinary, what was the point of it? With a sigh, the brown-haired boy left the Commons and went to have a hearty breakfast, bracing himself for what was to come.

When he arrived on the Quidditch Pitch an hour and a half later, Connor had been properly fortified. He had arrived just in time for Professor McKindy to start class, and paid strict attention as the professor demonstrated two spells. Although he was only a second year, Connor was pretty good at Spellwork and intended to try the rope spell, even at the risk of his eyebrows. He was also entirely unfazed by the frogs that emerged from the professor’s hat - or, he supposed, the frogs that were the professor’s hat - because he’d seen it before. Professor McKindy liked to do that sort of thing on the first day of class to really get the students’ attention.

Connor put his bag down, carefully pulled his wand out of one of the pockets, and walked over to get a metal disc. He supposed that since he was a second year who was decent at Spellwork, he probably ought to partner with a first year. Connor looked around, hazel eyes flitting from person to person. People were grouping up pretty quickly, it looked like. He felt a sense of urgency. He didn’t want to be the odd man out!

”I’ve never used magic before.”

The voice was behind him and to the right, so Connor turned around to see the boy who had never used magic before and the Headmaster’s daughter talking to each other. Two first years couldn’t pair up on their own - they would need someone to help them out. Connor straightened his robes and took a few steps towards them.

“Excuse me,” he said politely. “But it looks like you need an older student in your group. Would you mind if I joined you?”
