“Claud-i-a,” she repeated, stressing the middle syllable. While she didn't strictly mind one of the first years referring to her incorrectly as Clawda, she didn't see any harm in correcting him, either. Her name wasn't uncommon, especially across European countries - she was guessing from Anssi’s looks and name he was from that part of the world. He extended his hand in greeting, and Claudia took it - she didn't usually greet people her own age that way, but that had more to do with not wanting to show her nails to strangers than any other objection. She wouldn't refuse Anssi’s hand on those grounds alone, it would be rude and unfriendly.

When Anssi suggested walking with the Quad, Claudia agreed that it would be preferable to flying with an exploding ball, but that still left them with an exploding ball on a field of other children who barely knew how to ride their broomsticks. It was by no means an ideal scenario. She looked worriedly across the pitch, not feeling any better about this new scenario.

Yet when Anssi admitted to not being a good flier, Claudia smiled with relief. “That's perfect,” she said a little too enthusiastically. “I mean, I'm not a good flier either,” she hurried to explain. “We can just fly our rooms slowly, away from the crowd. If anyone asks we can explain we’re not confident fliers. We don't need to touch a Quad.” She felt much happier with this plan. True it still involves her getting on a broomstick, but at least she could avoid the noise, mess, and potential collisions of the ridiculous original class suggestion.

Lying her pristine broomstick on the ground, Claudia ordered it up and it obeyed (there was a knack to just getting it to hover at hip-height but she flew so infrequently she was a long way from mastering it). She swung her leg awkwardly over the handle - this was the single reason she owned, and had worn, pants - and sat uncertainly on her broomstick. She looked over to Anssi to ascertain how her companion was managing.
