It all happened so fast. Satveer’s spark of elation was doused in a wave of dread and guilt as he glanced at the cloud of glitter and smoke that lingered where Teal was. For the briefest of milliseconds, he thought the quod had just exploded. For in that millisecond, it was all ok. Teal had caught the quod and they could laugh about it later. However, Satveer soon realised this wasn’t the case. He caught sight of her empty, unbalanced broom through the glitter smog and Satveer looked down. He followed Teal’s inevitable path and caught sight of her hitting the floor. Satveer was breathless. His world stopped as he gazed upon Teal’s injured body.

Satveer, whilst an inexperienced broom pilot, had never fallen off a broom. He’d had carpet rash more times than he could count! And there was that one time he got concussion when his uncle flew his carpet a too close to the top of the open window, but he’d never fallen from a broom. Much worse, he’d never fallen from a broom because of someone else! He felt both broken and guilt-ridden. His stomach knotted and his pupils dilated I’m so sorry, he thought. I’m so sorry!

The gravity of the situation pulled Satveer back to reality. “Duck” he muttered as he looked to find Coach Reid or Mr Carter. Neither were immediately visible, though he kept looking in his periphery as he flew to Teals side. He could see she had a rough landing and was obviously hurting.

Satveer landed as Teal rolled over to survey the damage. As well as her bruised knees, she had hurt her hand or her wrist, and she looked to be in a lot of discomfort. ”Ow” Teal winced. “I’m so sorry!” Satveer blurted out, “I didn’t… I” he trailed off. He was speechless! Teal kicked the quod as Satveer’s knotted stomach tensed in anticipation of the explosion that ultimately didn’t happen.

Sadly, this was one situation Satveer wasn’t prepared for. Were it a younger child, Satveer would have offered them a hug whilst they waited for help. Ineffective in treating wounds, a hug always helped the mind! However, he’d never had to deal with an older child being injured. Especially one that he’d injured.

Satveer knelt next to Teal as she held back her tears and declared herself done for the day. Satveer tilted his head and nodded in agreement. He desperately wanted to show compassion, but he was very aware that Teal maybe more than a little aggrieved with him. Satveer hesitantly placed his hand on her shoulder. “I’m just so sorry” he said again, knowing it couldn’t undo his actions. “Can I do anything?” He asked whilst looking skyward for adults.

Teal didn’t realize that “high-tops” had a specific meaning (and wasn’t just British for “sneakers”). Sam seemed to be really in to shoes, which was funny for a guy. With “fat flats” like that, he... more
