Safety seems a low priority

“I'm nervous about flying,” Myfanwy replied in her strong Welsh accent. The boy had black hair and blue eyes, and he was lying on his back on the ground but he did have a broomstick near him. Also some headphones so maybe he was listening to music or something. Myffi didn't fully understand about magic and electronics or things that looked like Muggle electronics but were really actually just magical gadgets. Anyway the boy looked about her age and she really hadn’t learned who was who yet, or even who was in her classes. “I keep feeling like I'm going to fall off and I'm worried about it hurting,” she said. “Does it hurt?”

She wasn't even that high really, but it felt high, especially when she adjusted her round, rose gold glasses and taking one hand off the handle made her wobble a bit. “I just started here,” she offered, “and I've never flown a broomstick before. I think I've got some catching up to do to even be as good as the first years.” Myfanwy chuckled to hide the uneasiness she felt at being so far behind in something. She knew in her classes there would be a little bit of incongruence with what she'd already learned and what her classmates knew, but she hadn't really thought about missing out on an entire skill just because she didn't own a broomstick. She would catch up, though. It just took practise.

In the spirit of practising, and also of meeting new people and starting to fit in at her new school, Myffi gently tugged on the broom handle and flew round to face the other student at a less crooked angle, then she hovered there for a moment. She didn't want to intrude on his relaxation but he didn't seem bothered by her presence so far and t would only take her a moment or two to set off again if needs be. “I'm Myfanwy Owen but you can call me Myffi, if you like,” she introduced herself to the boy with the headphones who might or might not be in her yeargroup. “What's your name?”
