Better catch the beast

What was the point of living indoors and underground if you still had to deal with snow?

Holland liked snow but they did not like walking through it. RMI should have heated pathways (or just make the snow fall around set paths) so that you could walk around the outdoor area without slogging through slush. Of course, all of Holland’s shoes—including the ankle-high taupe suede leather boots they were wearing now—were magically winterized to protect from inclement weather and most other forms of damage, but it was the principle of the thing.

Even this early in the morning, RMI was nothing compared to Pittsburgh in the winter, and Holland was comfortable in their navy trousers, brown button-down, and cream-colored sweater. For a Spellwork project, Holland had animated the reindeer sequined on the front of their sweater, and it pawed the ground and looked around every few minutes. Today’s hair color was white-blond with dark roots, and today’s makeup look was natural, except for the winged gold eyeliner Holland just couldn’t resist. It matched the deer.

After Quidditch practice yesterday, Holland had left one of the books they needed for Ancient Runes in the dressing room, and been too lazy to go back for it when they realized in the Common Room. But they needed to finish the chapter before class today, so Holland was on a rescue mission. If they retrieved the book now they could read during breakfast and be fine.

On the way to the Pitch, Holland passed one of the many Aquila transfers. Holland’s original theory had been that the transfers were infiltrating the school, specifically Holland’s friends’ years. But now they were thinking that the deluge of transfers might have the opposite cause. Maybe RMI was soliciting transfers for some ulterior motive, like Bonilla was creating a secret army of young witches and wizards, X-Men-style. Something like that. Although if he wanted an army he had probably missed the mark on a few of them. Holland didn’t see how Myffi or Russell, for example, would be helpful if you were building an army. Maybe you could make the argument for Myffi because she was very resourceful and had a lot of survival skills, like making clothing and growing food. Russell didn’t seem to do much, though.

Speaking of Russell, he was on the Pitch too. Right, Holland knew he was on the Cetus team. Holland couldn’t remember what position he played but it definitely wasn’t Chaser; they remembered all the Chasers because those were the people Holland had to look out for during the match. But oddly, he didn’t have a broom with him, and more oddly, he was hopping up and down saying “oh no” repeatedly.

All right. That was probably something Holland (or anyone, but Holland was the only person here) should check on. Holland started climbing the bleachers to see what was the matter. They noticed with surprised interest that he had on an olive green jumpsuit. The whole thing shockingly would have worked as an outfit if his scarf and socks didn’t clash terribly with olive. It was a good effort for Russell anyway.

“Hey, Russell. Do you… need some help?” Maybe all the jumping and oh no-ing was him trying to shake off the mass Imperius curse on all the transfers. (It almost definitely wasn’t the explanation, but wouldn’t that be fun?)

Russell felt extremely uncomfortable. This wasn’t unusual, but simultaneously he was feeling comfortable as well, if about different things entirely, and having both emotions present was definitely... more

Russell shouted monosyllabically for a few moments and then threw himself onto a bleacher . Okay. So really just… standard Russell stuff. But he did seem genuinely distressed so Holland drew their... more

"Yeah, pockets are good, too." He was pretty sure that agreement wasn't what Holland was looking for, though he was also pretty sure he didn't know what more he could say to make his point about why... more
