If only the beast wants to be caught!

“Do you… need some help?”

Russell didn’t even notice he was being addressed for a solid-- well, not a minute, not even in this state could he lose track of his surroundings for that long, but his oh-nos repeated a few more times at least before the voice registered and he glanced up. “Jaws! Gone!” was all he could manage to exclaim in Holland’s general direction before the panic grabbed him again. He hopped back to his left foot once more, quadruple-checking under his right, and then dropped to his knees, flattening his stomach to the bleacher floor, and stuck his head under the nearest seat. “Jaws!” he yelped again, his voice echoing along the row.

He was about eighty percent certain that calling wouldn’t accomplish much, because he was also about eighty percent certain that Jaws didn’t know his own name. The mouse was pretty smart in terms of, like, not running away (until literally right now eep why), but most of the reason why he didn’t run away seemed to revolve around getting nibbles from Russell’s snacks and/or nesting in his hair. But this morning Jaws had been asleep when he tucked the mouse into the pocket of his one-piece, so he hadn’t brought any snacks along since he hadn’t expected him to wake up, and he hadn’t even considered putting a bit of fluff or lint into the pocket to make a nest because… because… because he was just an awful pet owner, apparently. He had been so tangled in his own brain that he had forgotten his little buddy’s basic needs and now Jaws was GONE.

Lying on the bleachers was uncomfortable, but it was less uncomfortable than the uncomfort of wearing the clothes he was wearing while being Outside in the Daytime and thinking about kissing boys being kissed that one time, so once Russell felt enough lapse in his panic to stop hyperventilating, he craned his neck to attempt seeing where Holland was. “He, he just ran away and I didn’t even notice until, oh no I’m such a bad person, oww,” he concluded with a wince. The head-craning was even more uncomfortable than the bleacher-lying.

Gingerly propping himself up on his elbows, he was able to look at Holland more directly, which shouldn’t have been awkward but suddenly was because here he had been thinking about kissing boys being kissed that one time and now someone who he knew better than Jaydon and was also maybe a little nicer someone else was here with him and what if they just knew somehow that now he was thinking about kissing at the same time as they were here and he didn’t even know why it was just involuntary and totally without his permission that was the topic he was revolving around? Russell could feel his face getting a bit warm, although it was crispish out so hopefully he could blame it on the wind, and then he turned to push himself to his feet and literally froze, except literally in the sense of stopped rather than because of ice or whatever. A beady nose was twitching from under the seats one row above them.

And then the nose bolted. “Jaws! Grab him, please!” he begged, lunging forward simultaneously in a not terribly well-thought-out attempt to grab the mouse himself. But he was coordinated enough not to crash into Holland, right?
