Then maybe I should go

“But it’s still a rodent in your hair,” Holland argued. “How could that possibly be the best place for him? Pockets exist.” Not that Holland would consider Russell’s hair very clean without the nesting mouse. It looked slightly matted, the way hair looked when white people tried to do dreadlocks but failed because white hair doesn’t lock. Russell’s hair was long enough to put in a bun (in fact, Holland couldn’t remember seeing it down, ever) so if he actually took care of it (regular brushing and washing to start with, and also wearing it in a different style to prevent damage to the same place on the hair) then it would be long enough to do fun things like braids. Or at least look neater in the bun.

That might require magical shampoo. Or maybe this round was a lost cause and Russell should just do a hard reset and cut his hair. “I do haircuts,” they said, a bit vaguely. It wasn’t quite an offer but it wasn’t just a statement either.

Holland had reluctantly helped Emmett shave his head after they had both visited Kaye in the hospital. Holland wasn’t personally a fan of anything shorter than a buzz cut. And Emmett had specifically wanted to be bald, so Holland didn’t even get to shave cool designs into the shorter hair. They had agreed to shave Emmett’s head anyway because they would do a better job than if he tried to do it himself. Once Emmett got an Idea it was easier to just go along with it. He was certainly tenacious, even if he wasn’t always the brightest bonfire in the Diner.

Russell was certainly still talking a lot. Alright, time to not be here anymore. “No, I’m getting up,” Holland decided. Russell wasn’t fully sitting on them anymore, so Holland withdrew their legs and sat up. Their head hurt a little. They might go to the medic, later, if it kept being a problem, but Holland didn’t like to go to doctors unless they had to, even wizarding ones who they’d known for a few years. This was just a bump on the head; Holland could handle it.

The sixth-year stood, using the bleacher in the row above for support until they regained their feet. Being taller than Russell made them feel a bit better. Time to pick up their book and then eat. “I’m going to get breakfast now. Is your, uh, mouse situation handled?”

“Huh?” Russell blinked. (Which had likely gone unnoticed, since he was wearing sunglasses, and even if he wasn’t wearing sunglasses his nystagmus was still acting up, more literally up-and-down,... more

"Yeah, pockets are good, too." He was pretty sure that agreement wasn't what Holland was looking for, though he was also pretty sure he didn't know what more he could say to make his point about why... more

          • Fidgeting aimlessly with the fingers of his gloves, Russell managed a sort of nod/shrug when Holland asked more about his light -- preferences? Was that the right word? No, not really, it was more a... more
