Sometimes, living underground had its perks.
The weather at Rocky Mountain International liked to do its own thing. The unpredictability of it all was refreshing. Living at school meant so much was predictable: classes were the same time every day, meals were the same, and you saw the same people in the hallways. Even being a magical school didn’t do much to keep it interesting. The one thing that was inconsistent was the weather.

Kaye often wondered what made the weather do the things it did. Once, she heard, it rained puffskeins on the Pitch. What made that a thing? She hadn’t seen much of the completely out of the ordinary weather as some other students had, since she’d only been at RMI for a year now, but she did enjoy that the weather did not always match the weather on Pearl Street.

It was one of Kaye’s high fatigue days. She couldn’t bring herself to go to Pearl Street; apparently, it was raining there anyway. Her reoccurring appointment with the medic wasn’t for a few more days, and she didn’t think a fatigue spell was worth the trip. She definitely wasn’t going to class. After spending way too long in her bed in Aquila, the fifth year eventually got up. Heather would be back between classes in half an hour, and the idea of spending time around her roommate was enough to chase her out of the dorms.

Her makeup from yesterday had been retouched and charmed back into place. She threw on some oversized sunglasses, her green bobbed wig, and whatever clothes she grabbed first. That included a spiked punk rock bra with a wing coming out of the side, a red leather jacket, skinny jeans covered in graffiti, and purple high heel shoes with a zipper on each side and skulls. That was all the effort she cared to put into her day, she decided as she stuffed a really soft blanket and pillow into her oversized bag.

If she couldn’t nap in her room because Heather lived there too and ew, she’d just have to nap somewhere else.

That led her to the Pitch, where the weather was nice and sunny and warm, even though it was apparently cold and rainy and gross out on Pearl Street. This led to her appreciation of the unpredictable magical weather. She spread the blanket out on the ground, set down the pillow, and got comfortable. She unzipped the jacket so the sun could warm the bare skin that her bra didn’t cover and closed her eyes, eventually dozing off.

After a while, there were footsteps, and Kaye sighed. The person seemed to be sticking around, which the Aquila wasn’t sure she had enough spoons for. “Okay,” Kaye said without opening her eyes, not that the person could tell; her oversized sunglasses were still on, “There are about four acceptable reasons for you to speak to me right now. One, you have food. Two, you have drugs. Three, you have booze, or four, you’re going to lie down and enjoy this amazing, unnatural sunlight we have here today. One and three are preferable.”
