I think you’re light enough already

Her royal highness Green Hair von Spike Bra deigned to take off her sunglasses to look at him. Her eyes were somewhere between pale blue and grey, like morning glories with a layer of sleet on them. Nolan decided that imagery didn’t fit with her whole… with the rest of her appearance. She’d make a better comparison with something more intense than flowers. Like two icebergs at dusk. Like clouds waiting for hail to fall. Hmm, no. He didn’t like either of them enough to write down.

See, this was the problem when Nolan didn’t get to write poetry for a while. Everything wanted to be a simile.

Her eyebrows were green too, which he somehow hadn’t expected, although maybe he should’ve. If you were gonna dye your hair some crazy color, you should commit to the whole thing, right? Not that Nolan would ever dye his hair. Guys didn’t really do that, and besides, he liked his tousled auburn hair and matching straight eyebrows.

Languid was a good word for his housemate. She stretched in a way that reminded him of a cat, and then took off her jacket, Nolan guessed so that he could see her spike bra better. She had to be doing that on purpose, right? And he wasn’t being a prude, right? Her outfit was not normal. Nolan glanced at his own outfit, which was tan khakis, a red t-shirt, and a denim jacket. Yeah, no, his outfit was normal and she was just wearing a weird bra thing. Not that he was going to point that out; if you weren’t gonna compliment a girl’s outfit, then you weren’t supposed to say anything about it.

Nolan might seem like a farm boy with a fancy title, but he was still a pureblood, and an offer of an unspecified favor wasn’t the kind of thing you turned down. Especially when you didn’t have a whole lot of allies in the immediate area. Plus, if he stopped here then he didn’t have to climb all those stairs to the Quidditch stands. Stairs were the worst. And he had enough food for sharing. Not, like, “too much” food—Nolan was a teenage boy so he was pretty sure there was no such thing as too much food—he could probably eat most of what the RMI house elves had put out for breakfast if he really put his mind to it—but enough that he wouldn’t suffer too much if he shared the food with her. And if she went back to sunbathing or napping or whatever he’d still be able to write.

“All right,” he said agreeably. “Make a little room on that blanket.” Nolan waited for her to move over and then sat down, dropping the bundle of food between them so he could use his hands to help maneuver his left leg into an appropriate position. Nolan’s stump ended above the knee, so there were two joints to contend with, and enchanted prosthetic or not, it didn't always go smoothly. If he wasn’t careful sometimes the foot would just turn around for no reason, which freaked people out. Not that Nolan minded too much when that happened, but sometimes he didn’t want to deal with that.

“I’m Nolan Ramsey,” he said. “We got cheese, bread, salami, chips, strawberries, aaaand cookies.” He didn’t have as much of the cookies as he had of everything else, but hopefully she wouldn’t take too many. He gave her a measuring look and then decided he was gonna say something about her outfit after all. If she got upset it was her own fault. “So I’m not used to RMI’s dress code yet, is ‘just a bra’ part of the uniform? Because I didn’t pack any.”

  • “Well, first of all, I wasn’t talking to you, but just so happens that I do have food. The real question is, are you gonna give me a good reason to share it?” Huh. Slightly unfamiliar voice, there.... more

He was going to share the food! There were very few things a person could do to immediately win favor with Kaye. If they were daring and fun, that could work. She also liked it if people wanted to go ... more

Kay stole some of his chips, which Nolan decided was all right after a thoughtful pause. He could appreciate a girl who didn’t pretend that she ate like a Snidget. A lot of pureblood girls did that;... more
