‘Not crashing’ didn’t exactly strike him as a positive sign of one’s ability to do the whole Captain thing. Like, for the average person, ‘not crashing’ would be hardly enough to guarantee them a spot on a team roster at all, let alone get put in charge of the whole team. But Russell was aware that he wasn’t the average person. Normally he still tried to weigh himself up against the average (and normally this meant falling flat). But after a moment’s consideration, he decided to accept Marissa’s confidence that this was a good sign in spite of the fact that it would be a poor sign for literally anyone else. Acceptance wasn’t the same thing as believing it, but it was a start. She’d been Aquila Captain for as long as he’d been at RMI so she definitely knew what she was doing here.

He ducked to grab his broom again and, realizing that Marissa had moved to take the equipment crate, picked up her broom as well. Russell was tall enough that his hands were big enough for him to carry both brooms in one, although he made sure to keep one gloved finger wedged between them to keep the staves from knocking against each other. His broom was nothing special, just a loaner from the communal Quidditch shed. Marissa’s, though - well, she talked about it like it was lower-end, but it was still hers and only hers. Beat having to share a broom with other students. Not that Russell could complain, because the school brooms were apparently older-yet-decent models donated by some RMI alum with ties to a broom manufacturing company... And not that he would complain, either. He was lucky enough just to be here and be on the team, even if getting named captain felt like more of a curse than a blessing right now and would presumably continue feeling that way for the rest of the year.

Feeling eyes on him, he glanced over to see Marissa frowning at him. Oh, dear. Now she was gonna lay the criticism on him. And he was sure it’d be constructive criticism, because of the type of person Marissa was, but he was also sure it wouldn’t improve his Quidditch game in the slightest, because of the type of person he was. Disapproval of any kind just made him stressed(er) and queasy(er), and criticism fell under that category one hundred percent.

“You… really want to spend more time together? With me? Why me?”

Welp, he hadn’t been expecting that - largely because it was literally exactly the question he wanted to ask her, like, constantly, but also because it was just kind of… random? But okay, Russell asserted mentally. He could do this. He could already feel his cheeks warming up again, but he could do this. “Erm, well, we get on pretty great, umm I mean,” this was off to a fantastic start, come on, do the words properly like a normal well-educated almost-adult, “you were basically my only friend here for a while? And you’re still my closest friend. You’re smart, and funny, and I don’t even know why you want to spend time with me either-” he managed a laugh that sounded actually not awkward “-but that just goes to show how kind you are, I guess. It’s comfortable hanging out with you, and ‘comfortable’ is hard to find, for me.” Huh, it didn’t feel like his face was on fire. It was genuinely less awkward than he’d thought it would be to share his opinion of Marissa to her face. That was a development of some sort.

Marissa laughed a little. “I get the feeling.” The summer itself hadn’t been a drag, but the last few days of it certainly had been. Plus, there were moments. The best parts of her summer had been... more

      • Blush. Definitely blush. - Marissa, Sun Feb 4 10:17
Marissa realized she took Russell by surprise. She knew that, compared to most other people, she had her life together. Unless someone really knew Marissa, no one could guess that she felt like... more
        • Too much blush, halp - Russell, Sun Feb 4 23:17
… Oh . Um. Well. This was also a development of some sort, and it took no more than half a second for Russell to decide that he was much less fine with this than he had been the development moments... more

Now Marissa was apologizing, too, which in a way seemed to make more sense than when he had been apologizing. After all, she was the one who had initiated the whole kissing him thing (bleh). But for... more

Forgetting about it sounded like the perfect way to handle the situation. It would be best for their friendship – Marissa desperately didn’t want Russell to go back to square one and be nearly... more
