Marissa realized she took Russell by surprise. She knew that, compared to most other people, she had her life together. Unless someone really knew Marissa, no one could guess that she felt like spiraling sometimes. The break-up wasn’t that big of a deal. There were just a ton of other stressors now. Danny and Holland were probably going to end up dating soon – which she genuinely wanted – and Emmett and Rose were still dating, and there were very few options for Marissa to have something like that her seventh year. The college stuff freaked her out and that took up most of her brain space if she let it.

Rose and Holland were going to apply to the super fancy schools, like the ivy leagues, because they could. Not only were both of their grades phenomenal, but they both had an idea of what they wanted to study. Marissa had neither of those things. She was, by all accounts, a good student. She just happened to be surrounded by her friends, who were great students. Well, and Emmett, but he didn’t have to worry about this for another year. Her grades were slightly better than his, at least. Rose and Holland would get into their fancy schools, Danny would do his big, career building, pureblood stuff, and Marissa would just… get lost somewhere average.

It sucked to already feel like her friends were leaving her behind. She knew it wasn’t on purpose, but it still felt that way.

But Russell didn’t make her feel that way. When she spent time with Russell, none of this felt… pressing. She liked dancing together, she liked teaching him Quidditch, and she liked playing with Jaws and telling jokes and having this friendship. It made her feel good. Russell made her feel wanted. Kit and Drew made her feel that way, too, although it was different. Plus, she didn’t want to start hanging out with just second and third years, plus all the children she babysat. That would just be… pathetic. She’d never considered herself a loser. She didn’t want to start now.

Anyway, hanging out with Russell made her feel really good, and now he was saying really nice things! She remembered talking to Elijah on this very Pitch a couple years ago, when they were both feeling down and weird about stuff, and they’d said nice things before he kissed her. That had been nice. She thought about how Russell made her feel and all the since things he was saying right now. He called her funny and kind, but he also called her smart. That made her blush under all of the freckles.

She laughed when he did, too, and smiled. “Thanks. You’re the nice one. And… I’m thankful too. You’re one of my closest friends, and I like hanging out with you. I definitely wanna spend more time together.” The red-head hesitated, and then, making a decision as impulsively as the one Elijah made a couple years ago, closed the distance between the two of them to kiss him gently on the mouth. She didn’t touch him otherwise; the equipment crate in her hands kept a small amount of space between them even though her lips were on his.

  • Snap, crackle, blush? - Russell, Sat Feb 3 21:28
‘Not crashing’ didn’t exactly strike him as a positive sign of one’s ability to do the whole Captain thing. Like, for the average person, ‘not crashing’ would be hardly enough to guarantee them a... more

      • Too much blush, halp - Russell, Sun Feb 4 23:17
… Oh . Um. Well. This was also a development of some sort, and it took no more than half a second for Russell to decide that he was much less fine with this than he had been the development moments... more

Now Marissa was apologizing, too, which in a way seemed to make more sense than when he had been apologizing. After all, she was the one who had initiated the whole kissing him thing (bleh). But for... more

Forgetting about it sounded like the perfect way to handle the situation. It would be best for their friendship – Marissa desperately didn’t want Russell to go back to square one and be nearly... more
