I can show you the world [Tag: Darlene]

Personally Drew still thought that Satveer was kind of weird, but flying carpets sounded cool as heck. As long as Drew had been at RMI they had never done anything like a flying carpet demo. Sometimes Professor Blair-West brought in guest speakers or had them do multicultural activities for her class, but this was even better because Drew was pretty sure Sam wouldn’t make them write a paper about it afterwards.

He’d tried to convince his friends to come to the flying carpet expo thing, with varying amounts of success. Huburt had opted out because he said he had homework, which was fine because Drew had only invited him to be polite—he and Huburt were kind of friends now but they hung out together enough for Drew by living in the same room—but kind of weird because, well, it wasn’t like Huburt was taking more classes than Drew was. They had all the same classes and all the same homework. Although he didn’t mind too much because if Huburt did all the homework first, Drew could get him to explain it later.

Darlene had decided to come, which Drew was pretty happy about. Drew was very very very aware of the issues between Darlene and Kit. It would have been literally impossible not to be aware, because Kit had gone off about how Darlene was racist against spiders. Then Drew had tried to explain that that actually wasn’t what racism was, because he felt weird about Kit trying say that not liking spiders was the same as being racist, especially since she was talking about Darlene. Darlene wasn’t racist. She couldn’t be, because—um—because. Kit said she was also disappointed because she’d wanted to be best friends with her roommate, like how Marissa and Rose were best friends who shared all their secrets and hosted parties together and stuff. In the interest of diplomacy Drew had suggested that maybe Kit and Darlene could overcome their differences and be friends, like in The Emperor’s New Groove or Sky High. He wasn’t sure how impressed Kit was with the idea, but she said she still thought Darlene was a “meanie-pants” so Drew wasn’t super optimistic about it. That wasn’t gonna discourage him, though.

Drew didn’t offer to help with the demonstration because he had another partner in mind. After Satveer and his volunteer set off for their second lap, Drew turned to Darlene. “Hey, do you wanna go together?” he asked, giving her a smile. “I’ve never done it before but it’s probably just like a broom, right?”
