We don't need a crowd

And just like that, things felt a little better. This was almost familiar territory. Marissa felt more like herself like this. She’d spent plenty of time at Lia Harper’s club over midterm, and she knew there was at least one person she’d almost hooked up with. Lia was wise, though, and intervened before the older girl took Marissa anywhere private. In the moment, the redhead had been pretty upset and cried in Lia’s office, but once she sobered up, she appreciated it. It was no secret how much Marissa looked up to Lia, and spending time at her club was the most normal she’d felt all term.

This was close, too. A college actually wanted her. It was going to feel so good to go back to Aquila tonight and show Rose that acceptance letter. Marissa knew the school wasn’t as impressive as Harvard or Yale or MIT or all those other fancy places, but it was somewhere. It was proof that, maybe, she could do this. She had some kind of future after Rocky Mountain International where she still fit into some aspect of Rose’s life. She’d show Rose, too, and Danny. Garen would be proud no matter what, and he’d fit in a nice I-told-you-so, as he should. Her favorite grandparent was rarely wrong. She shouldn’t have doubted him.

Then there was Myffi. She was saying nice things about Marissa, calling her nice and attractive, making her feel like the Marissa who knew those things about herself. The Marissa before all this college stuff, before she ended up alone, before the weirdness between her and Rose started. She missed being the Before Marissa. It was really nice to feel that way again. She took another drink from her glass, and then set hers down, mirroring Myffi’s movement.

The other girl agreed that this was fun – just talking and drinking – but admitted to wanting to kiss Marissa. She mentioned that if she didn’t, she’d probably wonder what it was like. Marissa grinned, the old mischievous spark coming back to her eyes.

“Same. And, well, we can’t have that. It’d just be a shame,” the Aquila confirmed before leaning in and gently kissing Myffi on the lips. She was still a little nervous, since Myffi hadn’t seemed entirely comfortable being close before, but she said herself that she wanted a kiss. This was totally okay.

Marissa moved back a little, and that was better. She’d definitely seemed down earlier, when Myffi found her in the rec centre, and she had cheered up a bit since the envelope had brought her good... more

      • Not right now - Myffi, Fri May 11 04:12
Myfanwy hadn’t done much kissing before. Before she’d left Wales, Gareth had kissed her, and that had been fun. She’d fancied him a bit, but so had Alison, so neither of them had ever done anything... more

“That was nice.” Marissa smiled in agreement. It was definitely nice. She missed doing stuff like this. Being with Danny was nice. The Aquila enjoyed being someone’s person, in a way she never really ... more

Even though she’d been so excited to get her acceptable letter, Marissa seemed like she didn’t want to talk about college at all. She starting getting all frowny and withdrawn again. Myffi wished she ... more
            • Glad we agree! - Marissa, Mon May 21 15:58
Marissa resisted the urge to shrug off Myffi’s very valid point. The other girl wasn’t the first to tell her this, and she wouldn’t be the last. The red-head knew that grades weren’t everything. They ... more
