Even though she’d been so excited to get her acceptable letter, Marissa seemed like she didn’t want to talk about college at all. She starting getting all frowny and withdrawn again. Myffi wished she hadn’t asked about college after all, it was totally insensitive of her. She should have just kept kissing her.

It was really surprising when Marissa said she didn’t know if she even wanted to go to college, although it made more sense when she explained that her family wanted her to go. Myfanwy had never been pressured by her parents into anything. They were both vegetarians, but had never forced Myffi to follow their diet, and she had elected to switch to a vegan diet herself. They had moved across the world from her home village, but Myffi had been ready for an adventure, even though it had been hard to leave her friends behind. She had made so many lovely new friends at school in America, people she otherwise would not have known. If Marissa actually didn’t want to go to college, it seemed inappropriate for her parents to be forcing her to go. Marissa could take a year to figure out what she wanted, maybe travel, realise that what mattered to Rose and Holland didn’t necessarily matter to her. But parents could be super pushy, and now Marissa had a place it seemed like she would be going. Myffi didn’t want to make things worse by offering alternative options that might not be viable anyway.

“Grades aren’t everything,” she said instead, when Marissa claimed to not be academic. All the progress she’d made in improving Marissa’s mood since finding her in the rec centre seemed to be backtracking into making her more miserable again. Myffi was determined to turn it back around. “There’s a lot more to college than your classes anyway. You’ll obviously make tonnes of friends and throw great parties.” Myffi smiled.

“But we don’t have to talk about college,” she said, putting her drink back down again, “or anything, if you like.” Myfanwy leaned in towards Marissa, content to keep kissing her all afternoon if that was going to keep her happy.

“That was nice.” Marissa smiled in agreement. It was definitely nice. She missed doing stuff like this. Being with Danny was nice. The Aquila enjoyed being someone’s person, in a way she never really ... more

      • Glad we agree! - Marissa, Mon May 21 15:58
Marissa resisted the urge to shrug off Myffi’s very valid point. The other girl wasn’t the first to tell her this, and she wouldn’t be the last. The red-head knew that grades weren’t everything. They ... more
