Do we have to?

Professor Blackburn had dropped a few ranks in Nolan’s eyes by assigning homework over the break. Didn’t he know people had things to do? Things like figuring out how to get your intended’s family to approve of you, and figuring out which of the mares would be foaling over the summer. He’d accomplished the second goal, at least: if Bonnie Buttercream was having a filly then Nolan had already called her, and he wanted one of the colts, too (didn’t matter so much whose). The first goal, he hoped, would be accomplished by the second.

But anyway, once Nolan was done griping and actually opened up the textbook he liked the chapter. Part of it was about water horses. Growing up on a winged horse ranch Nolan had plenty of experience working with equines of the land and air, but he’d never seen a hippocampus before. Quint liked the water plenty, especially when it was hot and he could roll in the lake on the ranch. One of his favorite summertime games was “Dump Nolan Into The Water,” second only to “Lure Nolan Near The Lake By Pretending To Be In Trouble And THEN Knock Nolan Into The Water.” Quint usually let Nolan take his tack off before trying any of that, but every so often Quint got ornery and decided it was time for Nolan to have a surprise bath.

So kudos to Anders for choosing the one subject Nolan wouldn’t mind spending part of his break on. Less praise for requiring swimwear in today’s lesson. Nolan didn’t swim. No matter how advanced his prosthetic was, he couldn’t just fling it into a body of water and hope for the best: it wasn’t exactly water-friendly. His right leg wasn’t a flipper like the merfolks’ tail, and when you only had one leg, swimming was exhausting. Plus wearing his swim trunks meant his leg stump was out, and that made people act real awkward. Seemed like a lot of the time they forgot he wasn’t able-bodied, and being reminded was an ordeal.

Whatever, he couldn’t skip the first Magizoobotany class of the new year and he really did want to meet a hippocampus, so he showed up on his crutches after a hearty breakfast of fried chicken and waffles. And… great. This was a mandatory water activity, and they’d be eating gillyweed, so they had to be underwater. Nolan knew it was supposed to make you better at swimming but heck, he didn’t think webbing between his fingers would help much.

He hobbled over to the professor to take a helping of gillyweed, then made his way to the edge of the lake and sat down, his remaining foot in the water. “Hey, can you put these on one of the higher bleachers?” he asked another student, waving the pair of crutches at them. “Don’t want ‘em to fall in and me have to bribe the merpeople to get ‘em back. I’m not much of a swimmer.”
