Claudia had never been to a party at RMI before. The only reason she had conceded to come to the Hallowe’en party at the Quidditch Pitch was that it seemed apparent that everyone - staff and families included - would be there, so it seemed almost rebellious to not attend. Claudia was not a rebel. She also wasn’t very good at joining in, however, so she had come equipped with her book, in case she felt the need to remove herself from the crowds.

Her family didn’t really celebrate Hallowe’en at home. Their house wasn’t on a street, and so they didn’t get any children begging for candy, and her parents weren’t exactly into dressing up in silly costumes and making fools of themselves. Her mother might put out some black candles and it had, in the past, been used as an excuse to meet up with family or friends for dinner, but it certainly had not been a substantial festival in Claudia’s experience. She had never once dressed up in costume for the occasion, and did not intend to start now, even though several of her classmates (and even students in the older years) seemed to think it was acceptable.

Indeed, as she made her way onto the Quidditch Pitch, Claudia realised that she would probably be in the costume-less minority. She had compromised, at least; she was wearing the only black top she owned, which had long, loosely fitting sleeves, a modest v-neck, and silver flowers embroidered where it flowed out around her hips. The skirt accompanying her black top was crimson corduroy to her ankles, and was currently decorated with tiny black felt bats attached with a temporary sticking charm. Because it was November, and potentially chilly, she also wore a full-length black cloak lined with crimson silk, and smart black leather ankle boots. She felt she had never looked so dreary in all her life, and it was certainly the last outfit she would have contemplated wearing to a party at any other time of the year. She even had her dark blonde hair tied in shoulder-length pigtails, which wasn’t a style she tended to wear because it was juvenile, but in this crowd of grown-ups wearing costumes she didn’t feel at all self-conscious.

After a couple of minutes of cruising the party, Claudia had discovered food and party games, but nothing that especially took her interest. She had attended, and was content to remain at the party, but for the time being she was more comfortable on the sidelines. The second year found a quiet spot and settled into one of the provided seats. She took her book - a fiction about a deer born to a woodland prophecy - from her black satchel, located the page held by her gold-leaf bookmark with her name embossed along its length, and began reading in silence.

Several pleasurable minutes had passed immersed in her book before Claudia was joined by someone. Despite her better judgment, she looked up to see who, or what, was in her presence.
