Careful, I brought a dragon!

Remington’s family was fascinated by Halloween.

Well, her mom was. Her dad, being an American Muggle, thought the holiday was perfectly normal. Her mom was from Mexico, and she was a witch. Halloween was one of her favorite Muggle things to study. Remington wasn’t entirely sure, but she vaguely remembered her mother mentioning that her undergraduate thesis for Muggle Anthropology was on Halloween. Or maybe it was her graduate thesis. No, that one was on popular media’s representation of witches? Remington had a hard time keeping track. Anyway, her parents liked Halloween, so Remington did, too.

She wasn’t a diehard fan of the holiday, though. The eleven year old hadn’t realized that people might be celebrating (for real or ironically) Halloween at a magical school, so she never brought a costume with her. Her dad was the costume person, and he usually made her costumes by hand. She was sure that if she asked him, he would throw something together for her and try to send it through the mail, but it was a little late for that. She’d have to remember for next year. It’d be a nice summer project for the two of them.

What she did have was a kite. She had a kite that looked like a dragon. And she hoped that the Pitch was windy enough that night to try to fly it.

For the first time that school year, Remington left her grey robes hanging in her closet. She threw on a comfy olive green dress that went past her knees and brown boots. She’d hoped that the little bit of baby fat her body was still holding onto would be gone by now, but no such luck. Maybe she’d be more physically active if the school had something besides Quidditch to do. Her curly brown hair was pulled half up and held back by a bow made by her dad. It was Halloween themed, with orange, black, and purple ribbons snaking around her hair. In the middle was a jack-o-lantern with an LED light inside, making it light up like a real one. When she realized that it wasn’t working the day before (because she always planned her outfits for the week on Sunday and had time to notice), she had one of the staff members charm it so it’d light up again.

She took one last look in the mirror and smiled at the dark-skinned girl in the reflection. She grabbed her dragon kite and made her way to the Pitch. She was one of the first people there, and she greeted the red-headed Disney Princess as she walked by. She didn’t see Dade. She hoped her friend came. She didn’t think he was a party person, but she thought that maybe it would be fun, and she told him so.

The Draco found a spot on the Pitch that was rather empty. No one was dancing around her, there wasn’t candy, and there weren’t any party games. She set down her red scaled dragon kite and began unwinding the string. She hoped it was a windy enough night to fly.
