I am Teal! Hear me roar!
Mon Jan 30, 2017 12:41

Halloween was Teal’s FAVORITE holiday. In fact, it was her entire family’s favorite holiday. Dad always went nuts enchanting stuff, and Mom’s crazy potions gave them all weird hair or squeaky voices. Teal even had pictures from a previous Halloween party at RMI-- Dad dressed up as Zilla, and Teal (who was tiny then!) was an egg. She even had a picture with one of Dad’s students who’d dressed up as Professor Rosse. So even though this year wasn’t a contest, Teal still wanted an epic costume.

Of course Teal had a Godzilla costume of her own, but she’d worn that last year, and she couldn’t wear the same costume twice. She also had a mermaid costume at home that she’d worn when two years ago, but the second-year was growing like a weed, and she didn’t want to ask her parents to mail it if it wasn’t gonna fit. Plus Teal still hadn’t figured out Charming her hems longer. And she couldn’t go up to Pearl Street by herself, so that left the iguana outfit.

The Draco had a crafty plan, though. What else was green, scaly, and had spikes on its back? A DRAGON. The Zilla costume was shiny green leggings and a short green cloak with soft spikes down the hood & back and a tail. All she had to do was add wings, and boom! Dragon. After a few owls back and forth, Teal’s parents sent her some sparkly green fabric and wire coat hangers, and Mom even sent along a special potion that when she drank it, would turn Teal green. A few quick diffindos to the fabric, and Teal had her wings. She straightened out the coat hangers, draped the wings over the wires, and used the Sticking Charm to make the fabric, well, stick. Then she stuck the wires to the jacket. There were shiny green dragons, right? She put the cloak on over a lighter green shirt, like a dragon’s soft belly. Not that Teal had ever petted a dragon’s belly, so she didn’t know if it was soft. But Godzilla’s belly was paler and softer than the rest of his knobbly skin, so she figured it was the same as with dragons.

Right before the party started, she gulped down the nasty, vegetabley-tasting potion. Teal was green! She grinned in excitement at the really strange-looking person in the mirror. Her skin and hair were both grass green. Not quite the same color as the emerald green cloak, but still. She’d have to take pictures for Mom. This was AWESOME. Maybe she should change her name for the day? Her roommate Annie had already left for the party, which was a shame, because the smiley German girl would looooove this.

Teal grabbed some of the scraps from her wings. There was one last part to the iguana costume, but she hadn’t brought it to the party last year because she’d been too embarrassed. This year, Teal didn’t care at all. She pulled the blankets off her bed and picked up Zilly. The Sticking Charm wouldn’t hurt the old plush iguana . His namesake would be jealous, she was sure. Dad often talked about carrying Godzilla around on his shoulders at school. It took a minute to rearrange him, but she finally got him to stay on her shoulder, tucked under the cloak. The extra wings stuck out cheerily from behind his faded green face. Now Teal the dragon had a little baby dragon!

Zilly and her wings stayed put all the way to the Quidditch Pitch. Teal was pretty sure they’d last the whole party, and she could carry her plushie friend if she needed. The qudditch pitch looked awesome! There was music, dancing, games, and food. Someone even had a kite up! But dragons needed food, so Teal headed straight for the buffet. She grabbed two cauldron cakes and stuffed one in each cheek before she’d even gotten a plate.

And with comedic timing, she heard someone behind her come up and say something. Oh, hiccuping hippogriffs! The cloak and hood, plus the music (and paying attention to food) made it so she had no idea what they’d said. Teal turned around carefully, not wanting to whack the newcomer with her wings. She made a guilty, helpless expression and managed a “HmMM?” through her mouthful of food. Lips shut tight, Teal chewed quietly, trying to look less like a chipmunk and more like a dragon.
