This could be a challenge

It was a day of contrasts and of firsts. Marissa’s passageway parties were secret, and against the rules, with illicit substances and dubious intentions. Marissa’s family-friendly Halloween party was public, permitted, with treats and snacks and games. Dardanius wondered which he would find more palatable; the the dimly-lit, ungoverned gatherings with his peers, or the open-air, organised entertainment holiday celebration.

Although his family didn't really celebrate Halloween at home, Dardanius had learned to embrace its cheesy traditions with his school friends. After neurotically hounding his classmates to discern whether they were going in costume (they were), Danny had even decided to embrace the dressing-up part of the holiday. He had not been able to persuade Claudia to do the same. It wasn't the first time that Danny had ever dressed in costume, but it was the first time he had ever in his life worn make-up (or technically it might have been face paint but he wasn't sure what the difference was and either way it was the first time).

Dardanius had decided to go as a mime. They were the sort of weird that could lead to creepy. He was pretty sure some people found them terrifying. Also if he managed to get through the party without speaking he was going to reward himself with an enormous cookie.

The outfit was pretty simple: smart black shoes, black slacks with over-shoulder braces and a black-and-white horizontally striped top. He also had obligatory white gloves and a black beret on his untidy brown hair. All this Danny has managed to put together himself, but he had asked Holland to help with his face. Holland was a genius, Danny decided, as he admired the finished masterpiece. His face was chalk white, his lips scarlet red, and his eyes had been outlined in black. He also had black eyebrows, higher and more shapely than his own, and a black teardrop on his right cheek. He had tried hard to look solemn but when admiring his reflection he couldn't help but grin.

Arriving at the party, Danny had further difficulty maintaining a straight face as he took in all the other crazy costumes around him. It was madness; it was brilliance. The fifth year strode over to the food table and put a gloved finger to his pursed red lips in deliberate movements, contemplating the treats. It occurred to him then that mimes only mimed eating. He frowned and shook his head sadly, then turned to leave - it would be devastating to shatter the illusion of his costume so early in the festivities - encountering someone standing directly behind him. Danny bowed his head in greeting, then silently pretended to be stuck behind a pane of glass. He was having a great time.

(OOC: mention of Holland approved by Holland's author.)
