Nice title you got there
Thu Jan 12, 2017 02:21

Rhiya stepped onto the Pitch, notebook and quill in hand, and scribbled quickly on the first page of her new notebook. With practiced ease she dated the page, added a title, and set up a color-coded system for her notes. The light breeze, bright sun, and soft grass underneath her feet went unnoticed as she slowly trudged her way towards the rest of the class. It was only when she looked up and squinted suddenly that she seemed to remember she was, in fact outdoors.

As the third-year took in the Lava Field before her she snapped her notebook shut with a sigh and stuffed it back into her bag. This clearly wasn’t going to be a note-taking lesson. As far as Rhiya was concerned she was here to learn, not be entertained and tricked into learning, as so many of the professors seemed to think teaching needed to be these days. Nevertheless, she paid close attention as Professor McKindy explained the lesson, that is, until the frogs appeared. With a gasp Rhiya fell squarely on her butt, sending items from her bag rolling across the grass. This is the last time I stand near the front of this class. She hastily stuffed everything back into her bag, scowling at anyone who dared look at her as she stood back up.

As Professor McKindy finished up his lecture, Rhiya began the chant she found herself muttering at almost every class: please no groups, please no groups, please no groups…. Rhiya had always excelled in her classes. She knew she’d be able to navigate the Lava Field with little difficulty; the chocolate frogs were as good as hers, as long as she didn’t have to…

“In the interest of fairness, I want you all to pair up in groups of two or three, with at least one first year and one older student in each group…..”

It was all Rhiya could do to not walk away from the class there and then in exasperation. As the class divided up, a first-year standing next to her chirped up “On a scale of one to ten, how important do you think eyebrows are?”

Rhiya stared, then pinched the bridge of her nose. “You have got to be kidding me,” she muttered.

“Good morning!” Raja suppressed the urge to hiss. Morning and good did not go together. It was too darn early to exist, and he had no idea how Professor McKindy was so freakin’ chipper. Raja barely... more

Raja looked up at the girl, her body making very clear that she didn’t particularly want to be talking to him, and her utterance doing little to dispute. He didn’t catch it fully, but it was clearly... more

As Raja squeaked out something or the other about working together, Rhiya considered her options. She could ditch the first-year pretty easily and try the Lava Field on her own, but chances were... more

“Oh no, you fell?” Raja was far less concerned about the red-turned disc and more about the fact that she’d fallen over. “No worries about having to double back. You okay?” Rhiya didn’t seem hurt,... more

Rhiya waited semi-patiently as Raja pulled off a successful Wingardium Leviosa . “Nice job.” They only had to do this, what, another 30-40 times? She looked ahead eyebrows in dismay at how far they... more
