Practice makes better [Tag: Frankie]

Now that Holland was properly on the team, their athletic ability affected whether Lyra won or lost. Not as much as Emmett’s skills—the points system in Quidditch was more than rigged to make Seekers matter more than anyone else—but Holland didn’t want to let more goals through than they had to. House pride and all that jazz.

Plus Frankie had his whole Quidditch legacy thing and was being scouted for pro teams, so a Lyra win in the finals would be good for him. They weren’t especially close, but they were friends, and since it was his seventh year, Holland felt slightly obligated to get better at Quidditch.

Danny or Emmett would most likely make captain next year. Holland was also fairly certain Danny only wanted it because being captain was Cool, although that didn’t mean he’d necessarily be bad. He cared about Quidditch more than Holland did, at least. Emmett would probably be a decent captain too, unless they were playing Aquila and he got distracted by Marissa. Come to think of it, Danny might not be immune to their yearmate’s charms either.

Boys. Holland would never understand how society had become so patriarchal when men were so easily distracted.

On a rare day when they’d finished all their homework early, Holland went to the Pitch to get some extra practice in. They stretched and ran a laps to warm up. Holland had ambitiously planned to run several laps, but halfway through the first one they decided that had been a ridiculous idea. Running was awful and gross and just made you sweaty in a bad way, not in a rewarding way. Exercise wasn’t all bad but Holland definitely preferred strength to cardio.

They retrieved a Quaffle from the equipment shed and returned to find the Pitch not as empty as it had been a few moments before. “Hey, captain,” said Holland, nodding to Frankie. “Want to help me practice, or just here to blow off steam?” The plan had been to use a charm to launch the Quaffle at them like a pitching machine—on the ground, not while actually flying—but if Frankie wanted to help, that would be even better.

Holland was mostly joking in their answer to Francine, which made it all the more baffling when Frankie got absurdly defensive about it. RMI’s rumor mill was quick, myopic, and inaccurate, much like... more
