Long as we're chilling together, I guess I can manage

Ruben prided himself on his ability to turn heads. Both in terms of physical superiority (admittedly his most recent act of enforced head-turning wasn’t too noteworthy, as it had only resulted in Kit Kendrick having a tiny little concussion, which Marissa had not been the most impressed by though the kid seemed to have rebounded with her basic sproingyness intact) and in terms of actual physique. His muscle definition had improved in the past year, firm while not being too bulky, and this being the first real opening Holland had given since breaking up with him to display it, he was very willing to comply.

He was also very satisfied to note how obviously they were faking a lack of interest in him. That was an optimistic sign. Yeah, sure, technically, he had arrived to the party with Kaye, direct from Aquila where Kaye had been lounging basically on top of him, and they were doing a sort of ‘friends with benefits but not all the benefits’ thing right now, but he and Kaye weren’t actually dating. Whereas he and Holland had dated, and probably would still be dating, if only Holland hadn’t broken up with him. Kaye would absolutely understand his need to see this through… not that her opinion really mattered on this. Because consulting his (best?) friend who could sometimes make him blush embarrassingly for no reason and seeking her approval for him to resume pursuit of the person he’d had an unfairly short time with and still fantasized getting back together with would be weird and unnecessary. Especially when he had a chance right now and no interest in hitting pause.

Speaking of.

“I think most people with functioning eyes would think you’re suitable for it.”

Still grinning, Ruben arched a strong brow at them. Banter was also good. They had been polite to him at the last school party, but not quite this friendly. Or flirty. Friendly-flirty? Whatever was going on now, it felt normal and good and he welcomed it. “High praise, coming from you. I will treasure the memory of it.”

Holland blushed at his compliment. It was probably silly for him to keep feeling better with every positive sign like this, but fan, he couldn’t help it. In appearances and style, they were so different from anyone he had been interested in previously, and also different from all the other students here. It’d be a damn shame not to acknowledge it. But they didn’t seem to quite get the meaning of his compliment, so Ruben returned with an affirmative (and more direct) “Well, I like your approach. Swimming is only a small part of a beach day. It is fantastic to stand out and take in some other parts of it instead. I have seen volleyball but never played it,” he confided with an exaggerated head-shake at the hole in his sporting experience. “Shameful, I am sure. But…” An idea coming to mind as he spotted a ball in the sand, Ruben silently summoned it and then presented it to Holland, his free hand folded behind his back as he made a slight bow, as if presenting them with flowers or something else cliche. “...If you will agree to teaching me, then I am happy to play you. A fair warning, it might become you just bouncing balls off me, since I assume a bat is not allowed here as in Quidditch, and throwing by hand is not really my speciality.” He waited for their answer, blue eyes fixed hopefully expectantly on Holland’s face.

  • Even with a chill pill? - Holland, Tue Nov 28 22:55
Having known Ruben for over a year now, Holland should have been able to predict that their comment would give him an excuse (not that he often waited for excuses for most behavior) to strut around.... more

“ High praise, coming from you. I will treasure the memory of it. ” This was flirting. This was totally flirting and Holland had to decide what to do with that while they blushed a little more. There ... more

Kaye actually took his hand, which was definitely a surprise. Of course by now he should have learned not to have any expectations when it came to Kaye, but old habits die hard. He helped her out the ... more
          • Whatever is there to object to? - Ruben, Sat Dec 9 22:32
Holland accepted the ball from him, and provided the excellent reassurance that volleyball was more about hitting than throwing. “Ja, I am, thank you.” Ruben’s grin widened as he matched their pace... more

The first time he got it wrong, Holland patiently corrected Ruben’s serving stance. Not that they were that much of an expert on volleyball, but they had played the sport and Ruben had not. The... more
