Should I keep my distance?

“No,” came the blunt reply, further reinforcing Danny’s suspicions that something was up with Marissa. She hadn’t even organized a party yet this term, as far as he was aware. There was usually a coming back to school party for the upper years, at least, or maybe something around Halloween. Maybe she’d just been too busy - Marissa was also applying for colleges, and she had her dance classes, and she was doing a lot of work for the musical production, as well as the usual load of classwork with final exams looming at the end of seventh year - but it was strange for the pre-midterm Marissa Kendrick party to be absent from the RMI social calendar.

Danny wasn’t sure what to say. He considered asking if she wanted to talk about whatever was bothering her, but her abrupt delivery of the single syllable she had already uttered led him to believe that she did not want to discuss whatever was on her mind; she’d already told him he couldn’t help, anyway. He hadn’t figured out what to say next, when Marissa said, “Holland still in class, then?”

He turned his head to look at her. He couldn’t tell if she was just making an innocent observation or if there was any implication behind her words. He knew he was spending a lot of time with Holland these days. He always had, of course, but he’d usually spent equally as much time with Marissa. He guessed that wasn’t true anymore, and the realization brought regret. Marissa was still one of the most important people in his life, except he wasn’t treating her like that just recently. Right now she was clearly feeling down, and he didn’t know why, and she didn’t even want to tell him. That sucked. Whereas Marissa knew exactly why Danny was there, and that didn’t make him feel any better. “You swim in the mornings.”

“Not exclusively,” he replied, his tone conceding some truth in the statement, “I ran this morning.” He recalled there had been a time not too long ago when he’d known Marissa’s schedule, and always known where to find her. He still knew her class and Quidditch schedules, but not whether she was more likely to be at the studio or in the theater, or, demonstrably, when she might be in the pool. He’d thought they’d managed to fall back into their friendship reasonably well - they still hung out with the group, occasionally, when the group wasn’t busy with all the aforementioned seventh year commitments, and there had been some teasing and some laughter - but he was overlooking that they didn’t hang out just the two of them anymore, and that they had re-entered that weird phase where physical contact felt completely normal and totally inappropriate at the same time. Today when Dardanius had free time, he hadn’t thought of looking for Marissa; he’d just accidentally found her. So sure, he’d been considerate enough not to spend all his time kissing Holland in front of Marissa, but he hadn’t considered her in any other way at all. So much for being a friend.

“I didn’t realize you did swimming now,” he said, honestly. “Or, floating, I guess.” It was relaxing, but he would get bored after just a few seconds if there was nobody here to talk to; Danny prefered to be active when on his own, otherwise he would inevitably overthink any given topic. He had a lot on his mind that could be overthought right now - it wouldn’t be prudent to allow that to happen. “If you’re always free about now we could make a habit of swimming together, if you don’t mind the company.” Okay it wasn’t an apology for being self-involved but it was a start.
