“You did.” Marissa couldn’t deny it, and she knew that. All of this was her fault, really. She could have tried to initiate something, but she wanted to give Danny and Holland their space to be… them. Marissa didn’t trust herself to not screw that up entirely for them. She knew she didn’t always make the best decisions – her stomach churned with guilt over Russell for an unknown number of times – and while she was super supportive and happy for the two Lyra’s… what if she did something wrong?

Now that she was looking at Danny, in the pool with her, both uncomfortable with whatever was happening, she had some kind of confirmation that… no, she wouldn’t do anything. Danny was still attractive and fun and everything, but that wasn’t there anymore. She still loved him, but it wasn’t the kind of love that made her want to sneak off to the passageways or find a romantic spot in the fake outdoors. That was slightly comforting.

“I’m sorry. It started off as giving us some space, then I just got busy with, you know, with everything, and then … I have missed you.”

“Me too,” she said, half mumbled, because Danny kept talking and she wasn’t about to speak over him. She hadn’t considered herself any busier than usual. Yes, the college applications added on to her life, but in the end they didn’t really matter. Sometimes she fantasized about not even going to college at all, but she wouldn’t dare say that out loud. Rose would judge her, and her parents wouldn’t have that. Marissa found that slightly hypocritical since her dad never went to college, but apparently it was a thing. Their family really cared about higher education. It made sense, she supposed, but that didn’t make it any more convenient or desirable for the Aquila.

The idea of checking in on each other was nice, but it didn’t really sound like something that would happen. Still, she nodded and agreed, because that seemed like the right thing to do. “Of course.” Her gaze drifted away from Danny and to the water in front of him. The more she swam, the more she liked it. Her fair skin never leant itself to the beach, but maybe… it would be nice to go. A real beach, with real sunshine and sand and alcohol and parties. It was so weird to feel like she had her whole life ahead of her, but she simply couldn’t imagine anything past this last year at school.

“Everyone’s been busy,” she said, not really thinking about the fact she was speaking, “I get it. Maybe after Christmas, everyone will have more time for…” she trailed off, not sure what she wanted people to have time for. Her? Seriously, selfish. “I dunno. What are you doing for midterm?”
