Lately there was less of Kit’s usual antics for Drew to deal with, mostly because she and Darlene were getting along and she didn’t have an acromantula anymore. (Drew had liked Darby and he kinda missed the arachnid but on the other hand Darby had caused a ton of problems for him, Drew, personally, and it was probably better for him that Darby was far far away hanging out with other giant talking spiders). She had some kind of vendetta against a first year now - maybe Kit was the kind of person who always needed a villain - but Drew had mentally sorted that into the “mostly harmless” category of events. Worst came to worst, she might jump on the kid and start biting him and get detention, but Drew considered that to be someone else’s problem.

On the other hand, Dakota’s entire existence was a black hole of drama. Dade had always been a prickly kind of person - Drew was pretty sure that the only reason they were friends was because Drew didn’t really hold grudges, so whenever Dade started to get worked up about things, Drew would just be like, “Okay,” and shrug, and then there wouldn’t be a problem. That was his attitude toward pretty much everyone, but he hadn’t realized until much later that it was one of the only attitudes that worked for Dade. The other attitudes that worked were apparently “be so hyper and distractible that Dade couldn’t take you seriously” (a la Kit) or “be really nice and unthreatening” (courtesy of Anssi). The only other person Drew could think of who Dade actually seemed to like was Holland, so maybe there was a third category of people who Dade liked because they were queer too. Now that she was Dakota, she seemed happier, but still terrified of Claudia and suspicious of Remington, which Drew could really do without.

Except for making a point of showing Malachi up at every opportunity, Remington seemed like she was doing better. Drew was awaiting the results of his and Anssi’s potions - the Draco hadn’t reported pulling the prank on his roommate yet - but mostly he was just avoiding Malachi. There was a part of Drew that wanted to ask Malachi what the hell was the matter with him, standing Remy up like that, did he have any idea how mean that was? But after thinking it out, Drew had realized there was pretty much no answer Malachi could give that would make the situation better from Drew’s point of view, and he didn’t actually want to have an argument with the other guy, so he was just leaving well enough alone.

(He had thought about submitting a scathing commentary to Heather’s gossip column, but hadn’t quite figured out what he might say. The idea was on hold for now until he had worked out something appropriately humiliating.)

Overall, Rocky Mountain International was a delicate ecosystem these days. Adding new people might upset the situation more, but hopefully it could balance things out instead. Drew was all for transfer students who weren’t caught up in all the drama yet. Having more people around was always better in general. Drew didn’t specifically seek out new friends, but you could never have too many, and sometimes you needed a different person to talk about a different thing. Like, Remy was a great friend for when he wanted to things stuff (either for homework or just talking about current events), but Anssi was awesome at being the Only Other Sane Person in their group when Drew really needed that.

Drew had been hearing about DJ Finn from both Remington and Dakota, which was weird. Ever since the whole Claudia thing at Marissa’s April Fool’s party, the members of self-defense club were the only friends that the former yearmates had in common. Remington was super enthusiastic about the fact that DJ had transferred to RMI to take Animagus lessons, and Dakota was weirdly and repeatedly enthusiastic about the fact that DJ had a gay uncle and was really nice. Drew wasn’t used to Dakota being that enthusiastic about anything, let alone a person she had socialized with. He really wanted to take this as a good sign, but he thought it would be a good idea to do some recon meet the other boy himself. They didn’t share classes, but it wasn’t that big a school. Odds were they would run into each other sooner than later.

They did, in the newly-minted Edwards Rec Center, where Drew was chilling for the forty-five minutes between Spellwork (his last class of the day) and Quidditch practice to save him the walk back to Cetus. Spotting an unfamiliar figure - who had to be DJ, unless there was another transfer boy around Drew’s age - the fourteen-year-old waved. “Hey! DJ, right? I’m Drew Tennant. Dakota and Remington mentioned you guys’re friends.” Drew nodded over at the billiards table. “You wanna play pool?”

    • Are you sure? - DJ Finn, Thu Nov 29 17:01
DJ would officially say he was settled into RMI. He had a few people he would tentatively call friends. Remington and Dakota both seemed like good people. He wasn’t sure if they both knew each other... more
      • Would I lie to you? - Drew, Fri Nov 30 20:48
Drew wouldn’t have expected his reputation to precede him with a relatively recent transfer, but honestly he shouldn’t have been surprised. All the transfers had to talk to Garen Tennant to work out... more
        • Yes? - DJ, Wed Dec 5 19:12
DJ grabbed the chalk after Drew dropped it as he answered that Tennant was his dad and that McKindy was his stepdad. DJ hadn’t known that either man was gay but he had heard Uncle Riley mention how... more

“ My parents are insane, ” said DJ, and then described something that did in fact sound insane to Drew. Aaron talked about the spells he worked on, sure, but he didn’t usually have Drew or Madeleine... more

                      • Nutella is healthy - Drew, Mon Dec 24 10:35
You could’ve knocked Drew over with a jobberknoll feather. All right, maybe DJ was not a suitable candidate for Second Sane Man, because—well—okay, so it wasn’t that Drew didn’t believe Dade about... more

DJ hadn't thought about how it would come off to Drew that he had taken Dakota's side. After all, DJ had heard her side first. The fourth-year figured Drew was sugar coating things to make smooth... more
