Would I lie to you?

Drew wouldn’t have expected his reputation to precede him with a relatively recent transfer, but honestly he shouldn’t have been surprised. All the transfers had to talk to Garen Tennant to work out their course schedules, so it made sense that it was a name they would all recognize. For not being a pureblood (or, well, not being that kind of pureblood, anyway. Dad and Aaron were both from families which were That Kind of Pureblood, but things with the Tennants and the McKindys and DeMarcos had not worked out well - Drew didn’t have all the details about why that was, but he would put Galleons on it being the whole typical “purebloods can’t handle gay people” thing) Drew was certain he got the most questions about his family by far out of anyone in school. Most people didn’t even know how convoluted his family tree was - it had boxes on it, for Merlin’s sake - and he still got tons of questions. Take note, Knights and Farnons, he thought sarcastically, the best way to have people care about your family stuff is to just be decent people with real jobs.

He was trying to learn more about pureblood stuff because of Darlene, but Drew just didn’t get it. No matter how hard he paid attention in Cultural Studies and History of Magic - the two classes where that kind of thing came up - he didn’t understand how purebloods had that much energy to care about who their relatives dated and married. If it was up to Drew, other peoples’ business would stay that way for him. Sure, Drew worried about his friends getting hurt - after the Malachi thing he wanted to make sure Remington would be okay, and it was impossible for him not to worry about Kit - but that didn’t seem to be purebloods’ goal and the goals they seemed to have didn’t really make sense to him. If your life philosophy wasn’t based on people being happy, then what was the point?

Food for thought for another meal. Drew joined DJ to grab a cue - he’d grown in the last few months and his arms felt a little too long for the cue he usually picked, so he took a slightly longer one today - and used the tethered chalker to powder the hitting end with purple chalk. “Yeah, he’s my dad,” Drew answered. Now that he’d been a student at RMI for a couple of years, he was over wanting other students to not associate him with the Lyra and Cetus Heads of House. It would’ve been a pointless endeavor - most people seemed to know anyway, regardless of whether Drew filled them in himself - and it wasn’t a bad thing. If Drew was going to be related to someone on staff, he could do a lot worse.

Like, could you imagine being the child of Professor Boot? It would be mortifying. You’d have to change your name.

“And Professor McKindy is my stepdad.” Drew had also decided to never say that Aaron was also his grandfather. Just because he was cool with coming right out with some info didn’t mean he wanted to get into the whole story. He also didn’t say that Professor Embers was his aunt, mostly because how she was “related” to him was complicated. She was Abby’s cousin, which made her his cousin, technically, because Abby was basically Garen’s daughter and therefore Drew’s sister, even though she was like, twenty years older than he was.

See, this was why they just said that everyone in the family except for Madeleine, Garen, and Aaron were Drew’s “cousin”s. It cut down on having to explain stuff that was best left to complicated diagrams.

“Remington said you transferred in to take Animagus classes,” Drew continued, grabbing the pool triangle from the hook under the table so he could set up the game. Remington had actually been so impressed by that that Drew, still on edge from Malachi, was a little wary about it. He started moving around the billiards table, pulling balls out of the pockets and rolling them toward one end. “Have you done the thing to figure out what your form is yet, or are you just gonna wait and be surprised?”
